NOMINATING COMMITTEE FOR FACULTY OFFICERS REPORT

ELECTION OF FACULTY OFFICERS

Candidates for Chair of the Faculty

Mark Sprague, Department of Physics

During my tenure as Faculty Senator, we have had three Chancellors and two Provosts.  The one constant in the equation has been the Faculty, the essence of East Carolina University.  Faculty efforts have taken ECU to new levels of excellence.

I have served as chair of the Faculty Senate Agenda Committee for the last 2 1/2 years.  The Agenda Committee not only sets the Senate agendas but also asks the questions that form the basis of each administrator's report.  I am president-elect of the ECU chapter of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society.  I serve on the Intellectual Property (Patent) Committee and as Arts and Sciences representative to the IRCC.  I was elected to the VC for Research Search Committee and to the Arts and Sciences Dean Search Committee.  I have also served on the Research Grants Committee.

Right now, we face challenges that include fixed-term faculty issues, childcare/healthcare benefits, salary inequities, enrollment growth, the push for DE, and many more.  None of these problems has a simple answer.

I believe that the principles of academic freedom and shared governance are prerequisites for the continued success of ECU.  Faculty must have a voice in the direction of the University.  It has been my experience that there is no shortage of faculty voices or ideas.  As Chair of the Faculty, I will be your sound-system.  I will also push you to continue to express your ideas and opinions.  Your voice will be heard.

Mark Taggart, School of Music

ECU has distinguished itself as a beacon for shared faculty governance. Faculty plays a prominent role through our service.  Service is an enriching aspect of academic life; it gives us a sense of community and shared accomplishment.  With the current administrative tone of transparency and inclusiveness, we are not only heard, but have the potential to be equal partners in the decision making process.  We also have the opportunity to listen, understanding the “why” behind some decisions, and participating in the issues that affect our academic careers.

We can realize a university where we not only engage in our own research, creative activity and teaching but also to support our colleagues.  We’re also looking outward, providing our resources and expertise to improve the quality of life of the citizens of eastern North Carolina.  As a university where faculty and administration work together to solve problems and challenges of university and community, we continue to be the set the example of shared governance throughout the land.

For many of my 21 years as a faculty member, I’ve served on the Faculty Governance Committee, becoming well versed in the policies and procedures found in our Faculty Manual.  I’ve served on numerous committees throughout the campus. I was honored as one of ECU’s and eastern North Carolina’s 99 leaders during Founders’ week.

ECU’s motto is:  “To serve.”  With my many years of participation in shared governance, it is a motto that I follow with a passion.

Candidates for Vice Chair of the Faculty

Mary (Dee Dee) Glascoff, College of Health and Human Performance
I am asking the members of the ECU Faculty Senate to re-elect me as vice chair.  In this role I have had the honor to work collaboratively with our administrators and to represent the faculty as we face challenges and meet opportunities for our growing institution.  I ask your vote to allow me to continue to represent you.

This is an exciting time to be at ECU.  Almost every unit is searching for new faculty members, the Senate approves new courses and programs each month, new buildings seem to appear overnight (while parking spaces seem to disappear just as quickly), and we have seen major changes in our administration.  Through our strong system of shared governance we have had, and continue to have, a voice in these changes.  Right now in the Senate we are participating in changes that include considering the role of fixed term faculty members, how promotion, reappointment, and tenure are evaluated, how the dossier is assembled, how we reward teaching service and research, and even which trees to cut down.  I am passionate about the voice of the faculty in the shared faculty governance process.  I am proud that there is a way to have my voice heard.  If I am re-elected, I will continue to speak with, speak up, and speak out for the faculty and for the university.

Jan Tovey, Department of English

As a Senator or Alternate for 5 years, I am pleased to have this opportunity as a candidate for Vice Chair. I served as Secretary of the Faculty for two years and have in 13 years been an active member of the university community, including my current position as chair of the Service Learning Advisory Committee and as a member of the Search Committee for Vice Chancellor for University Advancement. My Senate committee memberships and responsibilities have included Admission and Retention Policies [chair and secretary], Continuing Education, Faculty Welfare, Governance, and Teaching Grants [vice chair] and as delegate to UNC Faculty Assembly. I also served on the Faculty Serious Illness Policy Review Committee during Fall 2005 to develop the Q&A section of the website. As a member of the English department, my service includes Director of the Writing Center, Interim Director of First-Year Writing, and various committees. I assume the duties of Director of Graduate Studies in the fall.

I am committed to continuing the collaborative and cooperative work with other faculty officers and senators and our current administration to continue advancing the university and resolve the issues and problems facing ECU. I believe that we can continue to work together to provide a rewarding professional experience for our faculty and a successful college experience for our students. I also believe in the university’s mission, to serve the community as well and have worked to strengthen the ties between the two through my work leading the Outreach Network.

Candidates for Secretary of the Faculty

Dale Knickerbocker, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
I am an Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies, and have been at ECU for fourteen years. In that time, I’ve served two terms on the Senate, and have been on a number of Senate committees including the University Curriculum Committee and Educational Policies and Planning, both of which I have chaired. I would like to serve as Secretary of the Faculty Senate to support and defend shared governance. To me, the Senate, its officers, and its committees need to be resolute and vigilant in their defense of faculty rights and interests. Equally important, we must be collaborative. I would look forward to working on your behalf with the other officers and the administration to promote our common cause: excellence in education, research, and service. I would also like to express my profound respect for the other candidate, Professor Ralph Scott, and his long record of service to the Senate and the ECU community, and wish him luck in the election.

Ralph Scott, Academic Library Services
I believe faculty governance is like a patchwork quilt. It is composed of squares:  Faculty Senate, Faculty Manual (our contract), and unit codes. Each square provides an element of protection to us as faculty members. Sometimes we have to repair holes in the fabric as we are doing now with the revised Appendix D. At other times we wake up and find the quilt in a pile on the floor and we have to re-establish it as a cover for all of us.

We have a number of issues before us, not the least of which is the treatment of contingent faculty. These colleagues deserve better treatment from us. They work with us in the classroom, often for decades, without health care and other basic employment rights we take for granted. Day care for children of employees is something we can no longer afford not to offer. We need a safer more pedestrian friendly campus. North Carolina needs to route its highway system around, not through, a major university. We need to work toward preserving better, existing campus green space. We need long range solutions to parking issues, not short term band-aids. We need large scale scholarship fund raising events for all students, not just sport oriented ones.

I have served several terms in the Senate and have been secretary of the UNC Faculty Assembly. I believe I can play an important role in shared governance at ECU as Secretary of Senate. I would appreciate your vote.
