NOMINATING COMMITTEE FOR FACULTY OFFICERS REPORT

ELECTION OF FACULTY OFFICERS

Candidates for Chair of the Faculty

Purificacion Martinez, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures

My education in Europe has enabled me to appreciate that the vitality and democratic nature of American universities is due to its commitment to academic freedom, shared governance, and a strong tenure system.

Recent times have witnessed an erosion of trust between administration and faculty at ECU that must be resolved for the institution to successfully fulfill its mission. Some administrators believe that faculty do not appreciate the challenges we face in evolving and growing in the 21st century, and are ill-prepared or unwilling to respond to them quickly. Many faculty perceive administrators as having lost sight of our fundamental academic responsibilities and the aforementioned principles.

Evolve we must, but not despite of academic freedom. We must overcome our mistrust. My experience as Senator and particularly, as chair of Faculty Governance Committee has convinced me that shared governance can work swiftly if administration and faculty cooperate as equals. Our achievements include multi-year contracts for fixed-term faculty; a revision of Appendix C to include fixed-term faculty, a new Appendix D that guarantees continuity in the process of evaluation of tenure-track faculty,  of Part XII to ensure all tenure and promotion candidates use the same cumulative report format, and of Part XIII establishing a common timeline for personnel actions. As we respond to UNC Tomorrow and seek engaged university status, I ask you for your vote, as I believe I possess the knowledge and experience to ensure that progress is achieved in an environment of academic freedom where shared governance is respected.

Jan Tovey, Department of English

We have work to do at ECU and I stand as a candidate to provide the leadership for the faculty in doing that work and accomplishing our goals together with the administration. Shared governance will be a primary goal, as it was in my two years as secretary of the faculty, and I pledge to continue supporting shared governance while working with the administration to ensure that faculty and students have the best experience. Together, we face many challenges from within the university and from the system.

I have served as a senator representing the English department for the last 6 years while also serving as a member and officer of several Faculty Senate committees and as a representative to the Faculty Assembly. In addition, I have served my unit in leadership positions and on university committees. My administrative experience reaches outside ECU as a founding member of the Outreach Network and service as its coordinator. I am currently the Vice President for The Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication.

I recognize the role of the faculty and the Senate in the success of this university. If elected Chair, I pledge to work with faculty members, departments, schools and colleges, and the university administration to accomplish even more success for our students and faculty. I will represent not just my own colleagues from the Department of English, but also those from all disciplines on campus. I pledge to be a problem-solver working on your behalf if elected.

Candidates for Vice Chair of the Faculty

Marianna Walker, College of Allied Health Sciences

For the past year, I have served as the Secretary of the Faculty. I have had the opportunity to represent the Faculty Senate on numerous committees and task forces. I have enjoyed learning about the process of shared governance.  During this year, which is my 20th at ECU, I have served as a member of the Agenda Committee, UNC Tomorrow Response Team, Strategic Enrollment Management Task Force, and the Academic Affairs/Student Affairs Task Force. I also represented the Chair of the Faculty on the Graduate School Administrative Board and the University Research Council. In my leadership role, I have realized the tremendous talent among the faculty and passions not only for each discipline, but also for the entire university. In these endeavors, I have worked to represent the faculty at this important time in the university’s history.

If elected, I would provide continuity as a faculty officer to promote constructive dialogue, respect, and collegiality with the Chancellor and senior administrative officers, in the challenges that the university will face in the next year.  I would welcome the chance to represent the faculty in a leadership role as the university responds to UNC Tomorrow, Carnegie and Strategic Enrollment Management initiatives. It is important for the Faculty Senate to be the leader in university initiatives, missions, and strategic planning involving academic policies and curriculum issues. Academia must be preserved.

It has been a pleasure serving you, as Secretary, and I would appreciate your support as Vice-Chair of the Faculty.

Christine Zoller, School of Art and Design

I will begin my twelfth year as a faculty member at East Carolina University in Fall 2008.  There are many who have been here a much longer time and their contributions to University service and commitment to shared governance have been most impressive. I have been on numerous committees for the School of Art and Design including the Curriculum Committee, and served as Faculty Chairperson for four years.  I currently am the Chairperson for the Personnel Committee and Secretary for the Executive Committee. It is the responsibility of faculty to become involved in University service and to have a role in shaping not only our policies and procedures, but also the course of our future.  I have served on the Unit Code Screening, Appellate Hearing Committee, Agenda Committee, and the Due Process Committee. I am committed to the Senate.   I have served as a Senator for four years and have been elected to two more.  I have been a Faculty Officer before serving as Secretary.  I remain also committed to teaching and research and have been a Teaching Scholar, awarded a UNC Board of Governors Distinguished Professor Award for Teaching, and was awarded Extended Release Time for Scholarship.  This nomination is a great honor and if elected I will have very tough shoes to fill.  I ask the Senate to grant me this opportunity to be a part of a driving force of our University.

Candidate for Secretary of the Faculty

Mark Jones, Department of Criminal Justice

I am honored to be a nominee for the position of ECU Faculty Secretary for the 2008-09 year. I am Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and I have been at ECU since 1993. I am just completing a two year term in the Faculty Senate and I have served several terms since my arrival here. I served as Vice Chair of the Faculty from 2001-02, and as Secretary, the position which I am again seeking, for the 1999-00 and 2000-01 academic years. I am currently completing my second year of service on the Faculty Governance Committee (FGC) and I serve as Secretary of the FGC.

The FGC is one of the most vital groups on the ECU campus in the area of shared governance, and I have gained even more insight into shared governance through FGC work than I learned in three years as a faculty officer. Of course one duty of the faculty Secretary is to keep meeting minutes, something at which I am experienced, but the primary duty of any faculty officer is to work as an advocate for shared governance in cooperation with the Chancellor and other upper level administrative officials.

If selected to serve as your Secretary I will put my experience in shared governance to work for you and I will try my best to be responsive to any questions or concerns that you may direct my way. Thank you for your consideration; I look forward to serving you.
