RE:                   Request to Rename Degree Program

Request to Rename Degree Program from BS in Health Education and Promotion to BS in Public Health

The Department of Health Education and Promotion requests a name change of its degree program from BS in Health Education and Promotion to BS in Public Health.  The BS in Health Education currently operates under the 512207 CIP code with the CIP Discipline Specialty Title Public Health Education and Promotion.  Across the country, degree programs operating under this CIP Code are most commonly titled Public Health.  (UNC-Greensboro’s BS in Public Health is an example within the UNC system.)   This degree name is more consistent with current conventions of our accrediting bodies.  Our faculty concurs that students receiving this degree would benefit from the name change due to greater recognition in the field.  The date for the implementation of the proposed name change is Fall 2010

Attached is a letter of support from Dr. Lloyd Novick, Chair of the Department of Public Health, Brody School of Medicine.  Sloane Burke and I met with Dr. Novick and the entire Department of Public Health faculty and received their support of this change.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Dear Sloane Burke: This note expresses my support as Chair of the Department of Public Health for the change of the name of the degree offered by your department to Bachelor of Science Public Health (BSPH). As you are aware, I have been supportive of increased teaching of undergraduate public health by the College of Health of Human Performance including having our Department obtain a grant from the Association of Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) to further develop this program. Our faculty will continue to work with your department in this activity. Lloyd Novick
