2006-2007 FACULTY SENATE ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING
Full Minutes of April 25, 2006

The organizational meeting for the 2006-2007 Faculty Senate was held on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in the Mendenhall Student Center.

Agenda Item I.  Call to Order

Catherine Rigsby (Geology), Chair of the Faculty, called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m.

Agenda Item II.           Roll Call
Senators absent were:  Professors Reisch (Business), Wang (Geography), Levine and Schenarts (Medicine), Rose (Nursing), Morris (Political Science), Chancellor Ballard, Vice Chancellor Mageean, Vice Chancellor Lewis, Provost Smith, Cope and Killingsworth. 

Alternates present: Professors O’Driscoll for Corbett (Geology), Carroll for Woodard (Interior Design and Merchandising) and Theurer for Munden (Music). 

Announcements
The Chancellor has approved the following resolutions from the March 21, 2006, Faculty Senate meeting:

06-10  Spring 2006 Graduation Roster, including honors program graduates, subject to the completion of degree requirements.

06-12  Curriculum matters contained in the February 9, 2006, and February 23, 2006, University Curriculum Committee minutes.

06-13 2007-2008 University Calendar.

            06-14 Policy for making up missed class days.

06-15 Revised ECU Faculty Manual, Part VII. Section II. Patent Procedures.

            06-16  Revised College of Business Unit Code of Operation and revised
School of Art and Design Unit Code of Operation

At this time, Chancellor Ballard has not addressed Faculty Senate Resolution #06-11 - Revised ECU Faculty Manual, Appendix C. Personnel Policies and Procedures for the Faculty of ECU. The Chancellor will continue to have discussions on the proposed revisions and meet with the Faculty Governance Committee prior to a formal response.


The Chancellor has not yet approved the following resolutions from the April 18, 2006, Faculty Senate meeting:

06-17  Addition to the Undergraduate Catalog, Section 4: Academic Advisement, Progression, and Support in order to clarify the policy that entering ECU with credit for 1100 & 1200 does not affect the requirement that students must complete 12 s.h. of writing intensive classes in order to graduate from ECU. 

06-18  Curriculum matters contained in the minutes of the March 9, 2006, and April 13, 2006, University Curriculum Committee Meetings. 

06-19 Revised ECU Faculty Manual, Appendix D.  Tenure and Promotion Policies and Procedures of East Carolina University.

            06-20  Interpretation of the ECU Faculty Manual, Appendix D. clarifying that the numbers of faculty votes either yea or nay or abstaining in secret ballot voting can not be shared with administrators. (Once approved, this interpretation will be referenced as Interpretation #I06-22 online at: http://www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/fsonline/customcf/facultymanual/interpretations.htm)

 

Faculty interested in periodically receiving issues of The Chronicle of Higher Education are asked to call the Faculty Senate office at 328-6537 and place their name on a list for distribution.

A preliminary call for nominations for the Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, Board of Governors Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award, Alumni Award for Outstanding Teaching, and University Award for Outstanding Teaching has been distributed. Nomination materials will be due September 1 and portfolios due November 1.

There is no longer a curriculum submission deadline for inclusion in the official ECU catalog. Please direct any questions to members of the University Curriculum Committee at cuc@mail.ecu.edu. Agenda Item III.  Report of Committees
A.        Nominating Committee for Faculty Officers
Louis Warren (Education), Chair of the Committee, presented the slate of nominees for the three Faculty Officer positions.  There were no nominations made from the floor. Following elections, the following faculty members were elected to serve as the 2006-2007 Faculty Officers:

Mark Taggart (Music), Chair of the Faculty
Mary (Dee Dee) Glascoff (Health and Human Performance), Vice Chair of the Faculty
Dale Knickerbocker (Foreign Languages and Literatures), Secretary of the Faculty

B.        Committee on Committees Report
Henry Ferrell (History), Chair of the Committee, presented the slate of nominees for the Academic, Administrative, Appellate, Board of Trustees, Student Life and Student Union Committees.  Some nominations were made from the floor for various committees.  Following discussion and elections, the following faculty members noted in bold print were elected to serve new terms on the various Committees.
