To the ECU Community:

Today, I am announcing the formation of a University Budget Task Force, to be co-chaired by Provost Marilyn Sheerer and Chair of the Faculty Jan Tovey.   This is a university-wide task force representing the Board of Trustees, alumni, faculty, students, staff, and administration.

As you know, North Carolina faces reduced state revenues and mandatory cutbacks in our operating expenditures this year and, in all probability, over the next biennium (fiscal years 2010 and 2011).  State revenues have been reduced approximately $15 million for the current fiscal year.  Obviously, the magnitude of these cuts affects all aspects of East Carolina University.

The purposes of the task force are to:  (1) communicate across all campus constituencies regarding the evolving fiscal picture and the response mechanisms already in place or being considered; and (2) advise the administration and the Board of Trustees regarding the best possible mechanisms to reduce costs, raise revenues, and protect our core functions and strategic priorities.   We intend to emerge from this time period with our strengths and priorities intact and be an even stronger, more efficient university.

Membership of the Task Force is identified in the attachment to this message.  I plan to give the Task Force its charge no later than February 6, 2009, so that it can begin its work.
