NOMINATING COMMITTEE FOR FACULTY OFFICERS REPORT
ELECTION OF FACULTY OFFICERS
Candidates for Chair of the Faculty
David Long, Department of History
The ECU Faculty Manual has some remarkably faculty-unfriendly provisions largely unknown to most faculty. In personnel matters involving faculty members who have been denied tenure or renewal of their contracts, the appeal process assigns the university attorney to both advise the appeal committee and also the administrators. The faculty member is denied legal representation during the hearing. This is an egregious conflict of interest on the part of the university attorney’s office and the denial of a fair hearing. This faculty needs a fulltime Faculty Advocate, a licensed member of the North Carolina Bar, who will advise faculty members during the appeal of disputed personnel decisions, and be available to advise the Faculty Senate. ECU should have an affordable and high-quality child-care facility that is available for members of the university community including staff and students. We have already lost too many faculty because they cannot find good child care in Greenville. The university has no agency or department that addresses the concerns of new faculty who come to Greenville with spouse, but no meaningful work available to the spouse who is often as highly-qualified and well-educated as the new hire. There should be a department or agency of the university that is vested with the responsibility of identifying employment opportunities and matching spouses of new faculty with those opportunities. Recently-hired faculty whose spouses wish to take classes, are assessed out of state tuition by ECU, and not provided with any kind of moving expenses. These policies should end.
Catherine Rigsby, Department of Geology
The future of ECU must be built on shared governance. Since joining the geology faculty in 1993, I have seen administrations where leadership was shared and open and administrations that were unyielding. I have seen faculty abrogate authority and I have seen faculty stand up and lead. I have learned that only through shared governance can we make positive and sustainable progress – that faculty involvement in governance can drive institutional change. Currently, change is occurring because we question the status quo, we make processes more transparent, we are vigilant, and we negotiate. Without these, shared governance dies. As your Chair, I have worked for positive institutional change, consistently speaking up for faculty and championing faculty issues. For example, at my suggestion the Faculty Governance and Faculty Welfare committees are evaluating policies related to sabbatical leaves and faculty workloads, and expanding their evaluation of salaries and perks. And, I have championed faculty perspectives and administrative accountability in hiring the low- and mid-level administrators who will implement our policies. Important campus-wide issues such as these must be acknowledged and addressed in our policies. To help accomplish this I have developed unprecedented communication between faculty and administration, nurturing administrative openness and sensitivity to faculty needs. At no time since I have been at ECU, has the faculty had more of a voice, better avenues of communication with the administration, or a stronger role in shared governance than right now. With your support, I hope to continue this progress throughout the coming critical year.

ELECTION OF FACULTY OFFICERS
Candidates for Vice Chair of the Faculty
Dee Dee Glascoff, College of Health and Human Performance
During this current academic year I have had the honor to serve as the Vice Chair of the ECU Faculty Senate. I humbly ask your support to continue in that role for the next academic year.
I have been a faculty member at ECU for seventeen years in the Department of Health Education and Promotion. Over that time, I have witnessed a series of chancellors, vice chancellors, deans, athletic directors and coaches. I have seen new schools and colleges appear while some departments split, merge, or morph. I have seen changes in how promotion, reappointment, and tenure are evaluated, how the dossier is assembled, how our pay raises are determined, and where we park. While we may not think we have much to say about most of these changes, it is through the Faculty Senate that we have a voice in how the university operates. I am passionate about the voice of the faculty in the shared faculty governance process. I have been a faculty senator or alternate for most of my years at ECU and I am currently one of our university’s representatives to the Faculty Assembly. I currently chair the Faculty Governance Committee. I am proud that there is a way to have my voice heard. In the role of vice chair, I will continue to speak with, speak up, and speak out for the faculty and for the university.
Purificacion Martinez, Department of Foreign Languages
I have been an Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies since 2001, with a specialty in Spanish Medieval Literature. My philosophy on the Faculty Senate’s role in shared governance is simple: cooperation with the administration whenever possible, and fighting the good fight when it becomes necessary. In order to do both, the Senate must choose articulate leaders, who will represent the faculty well. An effective leadership team also must keep informed of the challenges ahead so the faculty do not react, but actually have a central role in shaping the future of our university. I have ample experience in shared governance at all levels of the university: campus wide (Provost Search Committee, Faculty Governance, Faculty Senate, Agenda Committee, Academic Standards, Teaching Grants), college, and unit (Personnel, Reassigned Time for Research, Faculty Evaluation). My service has prepared me to face some of the most significant issues for faculty nowadays, such as: teaching loads, salary issues, gender inequities. Thanks to my research, I understand that a modern university must be interdisciplinary. My teaching responsibilities make me see that higher education needs to balance both practical learning and a traditional curriculum. I believe the administrative changes taking place here at ECU offer us an unprecedented opportunity for a collaborative, effective and truly shared system of governance. For this opportunity to come to fruition, the Faculty Senate needs strong voices. I am prepared to be one of those voices. I hope that I will earn the honor to serve as your Vice Chair.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE FOR FACULTY OFFICERS REPORT
ELECTION OF FACULTY OFFICERS
Candidates for Secretary of the Faculty
Cal Christian, College of Business
I would like to ask for your support for the position of Secretary of the Faculty. I have just completed my fifth year at ECU and over this period, I have come to appreciate the role that the faculty has in the governance of our University. I want to continue to develop the strong bond that the faculty currently experiences with our students and the administration. I have just been re-elected to serve another two-year term as a Faculty Senator and am currently serving on the University Budget Committee and the Continuing and Career Education Committee, in which I was Chairman from 2002-2004. I have also served on other University, College and department committees and tasks forces. In addition to service, I am a strong believer in teaching and research. I was a recipient of a 2003-2004 ECU Scholar Teaching award and have received other teaching, research and community awards while at ECU. I mention these only to impress upon you that I am aware of the responsibilities, expectations and demands that our job requires and expects and I will work towards upholding the privileges of our profession. Each one of you obviously has this same passion for and commitment to ECU, as evidenced by your Faculty Senate service. While the role of Secretary is apparent, I want to assure you that I will also represent the faculty in a professional manner in all other matters required of an officer of the Faculty Senate.
Ralph Scott, Academic Library Services
I have had three, six year terms as a Faculty Senator from my unit. I have served in the UNC Faculty Assembly as Secretary for two years. I have a 35 year history of serving on various shared governance committees here at East Carolina. I consider among my most outstanding achievements my service on the Unit Code Screening Committee, Faculty Governance Committee, Academic Appellate Committees (including: Due Process, Course Drop Appeals, Readmission Appeals, Academic Integrity Board) and now on the University Budget Committee. I served first as Secretary of the 1989 Due Process Hearing Committee and then as Chair of the 1998 Due Process Hearing Committee. I believe in both cases we presented the Chancellor with recommendations that were fair to both the university and the faculty member involved. Our faculty appellate committees represent I believe one of the key elements of our shared system of faculty governance. I am also currently on the Senate Agenda Committee, the Committee on Committees, the Faculty Officers Nominating Committee and serve as a Faculty Marshal. In many ways our shared governance system serves as a safety valve for concerned faculty, students and staff. I believe that our governance system has served us well in the past and will continue to allow us to provide input into the running of this great university. I would appreciate the opportunity to serve you as your Secretary of the Faculty.
Christine Zoller, School of Art and Design
First I want to thank the Faculty Officers Nominating Committee for considering me for such an important position. I have been at EastCarolinaUniversity for 8 years now and although I have been honored with tenure, I still feel very much a new kid on the block with a lot to learn. These lessons can only be learned through not being afraid to be involved. I am currently the Faculty Chairperson for the School of Art and Design and serve as a Faculty Senator. I have served as Secretary and Chairperson for our unit’s Curriculum Committee and currently serve as Secretary for the SOAD Executive Committee. I am also a member of the University’s Unit Code Screening Committee and Due Process Committee of which I am the Vice Chairperson. I have always felt it is imperative for young faculty to get involved in what goes on here and do not shy away from the challenges you will have to face through that involvement. I would very much welcome this opportunity to serve the faculty in the capacity as Secretary and would give my best efforts to fulfill the confidence in which you have shown in me by offering my name for this position.
