EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY
2002-2003 FACULTY SENATE
The organizational meeting for the 2002-2003 Faculty Senate was held on Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in the Mendenhall Student Center Great Room.
Senators absent were: Professors Conner-Kerr (Allied Health Sciences), Griffin (Education), Watson and Wilentz (English), Glascoff (Health and Human Performance), Engel, Fletcher, Kovacs, McMillen, and Meredith (Medicine), Tranbarger (Nursing), Sprague (Physics), Pozzuto (Social Work and Criminal Justice Studies), Chancellor Muse, Vice Chancellor Feldbush, Vice Chancellor Horns, Administrative Council Representative Varner and Killingsworth (Past Chair of the Faculty).
Alternates present were: Professors Bamberg for Painter (Allied Health Sciences) and Kellogg for Dobbs (Medicine).
Announcements:
1. Reminder that all Faculty Senate materials (agendas, minutes, announcements) will be distributed via the
Faculty Listserv. Faculty choosing to opt out of the Faculty Listserv will continue to be able to access the
materials via the Faculty Senate website. Actual paper copies of the various documents will only be available in
the Faculty Senate office.
2. Faculty interested in periodically receiving past copies of "The Chronicle of Higher Education" are asked to call
the Faculty Senate office and place their name on a list for distribution.
3. Representatives from UNC-Public Television interviewed Chancellor Muse, Chair Bob Morrison, Carroll Varner (Director of Academic Library Services) and Sadie Cox (Past SGA President) recently about the State budget situation and it’s effects on the University. The interview will be aired on May 28, 2002.
4. 2003/2004 Research/Creative Activity Grant Applications and Teaching Grant Applicationsare now available in the Faculty Senate office (140 Rawl Annex) and on the Committees’ web sites as noted below. These grants will be due in September 2002, with funding to begin Summer 2003.

5. A preliminary call for nominations for the Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, Board of
Governors Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award, Alumni Award for Outstanding Teaching, University Award for Outstanding Teaching, and Max Ray Joyner Award for Faculty Service Through Continuing Education will be distributed soon to all academic unit heads. Copies of the different award nominating procedures are available in the Center for Faculty Development (124 Ragsdale) and Faculty Senate office (140 Rawl Annex). The nomination materials will be due in September 2002, with the award winners recognized in Spring 2003.

7. A special thanks was extended to the Faculty Senate alternates who agreed to serve as Tellers during the meeting:
Anthony Capehart (Biology), Michael Aceto (English), Scott Lecce (Geography), and Burton Ogle (Industry and Technology).
Following elections, the following faculty members were elected as the 2002-2003 Faculty Officers:
Bob Morrison (Chemistry), Chair of the Faculty
Rick Niswander (Business), Vice Chair of the Faculty
John Cope (Psychology), Secretary of the Faculty
Patricia Anderson (Education) has graciously agreed to serve again as Parliamentarian.
The following faculty members were elected to serve new terms on the various Academic, Administrative, Appellate, Board of Trustee, Student Life, and Student Union Committees. These new terms are for 3 years unless otherwise noted.
All committee members will be notified over the Summer of committee organizational meeting dates.
