EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY
2003-2004 FACULTY SENATE
The organizational meeting for the 2003-2004 Faculty Senate was held on Tuesday, April 29, 2003, in the Mendenhall Student Center Great Room.
Agenda Item I. Call to Order
Bob Morrison (Chemistry), Chair of the Faculty, called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m.
Agenda Item II. Roll Call
Senators absent were: Professors Conner-Kerr and Painter (Allied Health Sciences), Sharpe (English), Cox, Willson, and Meredith (Medicine), Chancellor Muse, Vice Chancellor Feldbush, Vice Chancellor Lewis, Provost Swart, Administrative Council Representative Varner and Killingsworth (Past Chair of the Faculty).
Alternates present were: Professors Eagle for Twarog (Art), McKinnon for Chen (Human Environmental Sciences), and Moll for Ulffers (Music).
Announcements:
1. Faculty interested in periodically receiving past copies of "The Chronicle of Higher Education" are asked to call the Faculty Senate office and place their name on a list for distribution.
2. 2004/2005 Research/Creative Activity Grant Applications and Teaching Grant Applications are now available in the Faculty Senate office (140 Rawl Annex) and on the Committees’ web sites as noted below. These grants will be evaluated in Fall 2003, with funding to begin Summer 2004.

3. A preliminary call for nominations for the Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, Board of
Governors Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award, Alumni Award for Outstanding Teaching, and University Award for Outstanding Teaching will be distributed soon to all academic unit heads. Copies of the different award nominating procedures are available in the Center for Faculty Development (124 Ragsdale). The nomination materials will be due in September 2003, with the award winners recognized in Spring 2004.

Agenda Item III. Report of Committees
A. Nominating Committee for Faculty Officers
Mark Taggart (Music), Chair of the Committee, presented a slate of nominees for the three Faculty Officer positions. Following elections, the following faculty members were elected to serve as the 2003-2004 Faculty Officers:
Rick Niswander (Business), Chair of the Faculty
Catherine Rigsby (Geology), Vice Chair of the Faculty
Jan Tovey (English), Secretary of the Faculty
Patricia Anderson (Education) has graciously agreed to serve again as Parliamentarian.
B. Committee on Committees Report
Henry Ferrell (History), Chair of the Committee, presented a slate of nominees for the Academic, Administrative, Appellate, Board of Trustees, Student Life and Student Union Committees. Following elections, the following faculty members noted in bold print were elected to serve new terms on the various Committees.

of Fall committee organizational meeting dates.
