EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY
2001-2002 FACULTY SENATE
The organizational meeting for the 2001-2002 Faculty Senate was held on Tuesday, 1 May 2001, in the Mendenhall Student Center Great Room.
Senators absent were: Professors Graziani (Art), Watson (English), Engel and Dobbs (Medicine), Hall (Psychology), Chancellor Eakin, Vice Chancellor Feldbush, Interim Vice Chancellor Thompson, Administrative Council Representative Varner, Past Chair Killingsworth (Business), and Faculty Assembly Delegate Rosenberg.
Alternates present were: Professors Bamberg for Holbert (Allied Health Sciences), Schmidt for Kalmus (Biology), Spickerman for Tabrizi (Computer Science), Tovey for Palumbo and Deena for Wilentz (English), Felts for Decker (Health and Human Performance), and Jacobs for Ulffers (Music).
Announcements:
1. Reminder that all Faculty Senate materials (agendas, minutes, announcements) will be distributed via the Faculty Listserv. Faculty choosing to opt out of the Faculty Listserv will continue to be able to access the materials via the Faculty Senate website. Actual paper copies of the various documents will only be available in the Faculty Senate office.
2. Faculty interested in periodically receiving past copies of "The Chronicle of Higher Education" are asked to call the Faculty Senate office and place their name on a list for distribution.
3. Applications for the 2002-2003 University Teaching Grants and Research/Creative Activity Grants are now available in the Faculty Senate office for interested faculty. The deadline for each grant is as follows:

6. A call for nominations for the Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, for the Board of Governors Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award and for the Alumni Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award has been sent to all academic unit heads. Copies of the three different award nominating procedures may be obtained in the Center for Faculty Development (124 Ragsdale). The deadline for all award nominations is Monday, 17 September 2001.
Following elections, the following faculty members were elected as the 2001-2002 Faculty Officers:

Mark Jones (Social Work and Criminal Justice Studies), Vice Chair of the Faculty
Linda Allred (Psychology), Secretary of the Faculty
Patricia Anderson (Education) has graciously agreed to serve again next year as Parliamentarian.

Prior to the close of the meeting, Ferrell (History) moved that the Chair of the Faculty constitute the University Budget Committee early and have this new academic committee meet over the Summer to discuss the various budgetary issues. The motion passed by a voice vote of the Faculty Senate.
