Graduate School Administrative Board Meeting

1) Minutes of April 23 GASB meeting will be presented for approval at next meeting.
2) Graduate Curriculum Committee Report
The Graduate Curriculum Committee minutes of Wed., April 4, and Wed., April 18 were approved as submitted by chair, Sharon Knight. All recommended amendments have been received by the Chair. See appended catalog notes.
Sharon Knight noted that effective Fall 2007, any curriculum proposal requiring an amendment will be tabled for consideration by the GCC until the amended proposal is received. See appended catalog notes.
Sharon Knight distributed a draft of the 2006-2007 Annual Report of the ECU Graduate Curriculum Committee and expressed appreciation for the excellent work of committee members. A motion was made and approved recognizing the outstanding work of the committee with the assistance of Mr. Kevin Snyder and Ms. Diane Coltraine.
3) Announcements
A motion was made by Dean Pellicane and approved recognizing Dr. Gerhard Kalmus for his outstanding service and contributions to graduate education during the current year and throughout his career at ECU.
Dean Pellicane announced that the Graduate School staff will be working with Laurie Godwin this summer on improvements to the Graduate School web site. He encouraged GSAB members to forward any suggestions for improvements and examples of exemplary sites to him.
Reporting on the recent Graduate Deans Council meeting in Chapel Hill, Dean Pellicane informed the group of the final plan announced by the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) for new categories and definitions for classification of first-professional degree reporting in the Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data System (IPEDS). The first-professional degree category will be eliminated, master’s degrees will be collected in a single category, and doctor’s degrees will be collected in three categories: research/scholarship, professional practice, and a new group designated ‘other’ that is yet to be defined. Another item of business from the Deans Council was the new proposed guidelines published by the US Dept. of Education for collecting, maintaining, and reporting race/ethnicity for both students and faculty ; the timeline for implementation; and implications.
4. Discussion of the Division of Research and Graduate Studies Strategic Plan
Concerns expressed by group included
• Definition of research - emphasis in the document seems to be on health and medical-related research rather than reflecting the breadth of research taking place at the university. Holistic statement needed in document about “facilitating all research” with emphasis on particular areas.
• Question raised if the document reflects strategic plan for research only or if graduate studies is to be included. Concern raised that inclusion of strategic plans from all colleges and schools needed.
