1. The meeting was called to order by Dean Pellicane at 3:40 pm.
2. No new GCC minutes.
3. The GSAB minutes from 6/16/2008 were approved.
Note: Dr. George Kasperek noted the graduate faculty criteria for the Brody School of Medicine Life Sciences should be changed to just the Brody School of Medicine.
4. Announcements
Continuous registration – Angela Anderson from the Registrar’s office would like to use 4 letter prefixes.
5. Approve for the record – policies previously approved electronically
a. Academic Integrity – The motion to approve was passed
b. Scholastic Standards – The motion to approve was passed
6. Policies for further discussion
a. Continuous registration - Dr. George Kasperek suggested this be a course in every unit instead of one course for all units to use. Dean Pellicane will check to if there is a precedent for continuous registration (fees) in the UNC System. Also, it was suggested that the statement ‘you may use this for a 7001 course’ be taken out of the document.
b. Transdisciplinary Programs
Note: Omit ‘be’ or make enrolled past tense and omit ‘this’ under the dual degree subheading
c. Admissions
Dean Pellicane explained the importance of tangible admissions criteria while still allowing units latitude Dean Pellicane discussed 3 different admissions tracks to Graduate School
Track 1 - Typical entry into graduate school
Track 2 - GPA and test scores will be weighted to form an admissions index. Units would have the flexibility to decide how they would like to weight GPA and test scores. The admissions index would contain absolute minimums so there is a visible ‘cut off’.
Dean Pellicane will email this model to all members for feedback.
Track 3 - Intended for individuals who are professionally successful and/or who have many life accomplishments, however these individuals may not meet the “typical” standards of a younger and fresher student. Units could decide how to weight criteria for admission.
d. Graduate Enrollment Requirements - The motion to approve was passed.
8. Other Business
Dr. Stan Eakins suggested there be better tracking for certificate programs.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:55 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Amy Tripp
