Policies for Out-of-State Tuition Remissions Graduate School
Amended by the Administrative Board of the Graduate School,
February 24, 2003
Graduate program directors may nominate applicants to the Graduate School for award of an out-of-state tuition remission (see eligibility criteria below). Applicants must ensure that the admission application form is received in sufficient time for the receipt of credentials and review of the application by both the Graduate School and the program. Once the department awards a remission, program directors should request a written confirmation of acceptance. (Not before April 15 and no later than June 1). International students awarded a tuition remission must advise the Graduate School that they are coming prior to the issuance of an I-20.
Awards to incoming students should be encumbered for both semesters of the academic year. Consideration of requests for a second year of support (continuing students) must include a review of the student’s previous academic status. These awards are contingent upon maintaining academic eligibility and the availability of funds from the state of North Carolina.
Students are initially awarded two semesters of out-of-state tuition remissions to cover their first year of enrollment. The maximum number of remissions a master’s student may receive is four and the summer session is included in the limit of four semesters. The maximum number of remissions a doctoral student may receive is eight and the summer session is included in the limit of eight semesters. Students are eligible to become North Carolina residents for tuition proposes while they are enrolled. In light of this policy, all new students who receive remissions are strongly encouraged to take the necessary steps to become residents for tuition purposes.
Assignment of a full or partial out-of-state tuition remission commits the program to a minimum support of $3,000 at the master’s level and $5,000 at the doctoral level. The financial support may come from either graduate assistantship funds or equivalent financial support, e.g., Fulbright, Muskie, research grant, etc.
Criteria for Eligibility: (All must meet these minimum qualifications – no exceptions will be granted.) Remission awardees must have: 1) completed admission to a graduate program; 2) overall GPA or senior year GPA of 3.0; 3) GRE (V+Q) = 1000 (with no one score less than 400), or MAT = 50, or GMAT = 500.
Continuing Students must meet these minimum requirements: 1) GPA of 3.0 and no outstanding “I” grades (unless due to illness).
