The East Carolina University Honors Program offers an exceptional, residential educational experience.
We match you with some of the most exciting professors on campus. We stress discussion over lecture and essay over short-answer examinations, and we limit class size to twenty students of your caliber. We believe that your college program should respect you for your intelligence and your ability to succeed academically. And that's what we do.
Support . . .
We support your intention to be the best student you can be by providing you with personalized early registration, special advising, and special library privileges.
Undergraduate research assistantships are available to honors students so that they may assist an instructor with research. In the University Honors Program, you get the attention of a smaller college and the opportunities of a large, comprehensive university.
Many honors students qualify for scholarships of some kind. The ECU scholarship program is administered by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Financial assistance may also be available through the ECU Office of Student Financial Aid.
Enrichment . . .
You can learn facts anywhere. It's the educational experience that will make your college years memorable. ECU honors classes are often visited by guest lecturers and enhanced by the latest media. Honors seminars are fresh and often controversial and multicultural.
During your first two years at ECU, you can choose from a wide variety of honors courses and unusual seminars to fulfill your General Education Honors requirement (24 semester hours with a minimum 3.3 GPA). We encourage you to complete an independent upper-level project in your major--a thesis, a portfolio, a field experience, or co-teaching--to earn University Honors (30 semester hours with a minimum 3.5 GPA). You may take as many honors courses as you like.
East Carolina is a member of Phi Eta Sigma. Freshmen with at least a 3.5 GPA after one semester at ECU are invited to join this national honor society.
Study abroad can be a valuable component of honors work. Honors students are encouraged to participate in a study-abroad experience to learn about different cultures and learn more about themselves.
Honors students have the opportunity to attend events sponsored by the School of Music with complimentary tickets from the University Honors Program.
The University Honors Program also emphasizes involvement. Students are challenged to reach out to the local community through service projects and other activities.
Camaraderie . . .
You like to have friends with intellectual interests similar to your own. You want friends you will know for a lifetime. You'd like to live with other honors students.
Honors student groups, including Phi Eta Sigma (Freshmen Honors Society), the Weekly Voyager (honors student newsletter), Passport Events, and a schedule of activities keep you involved throughout the year. Honors housing is currently available in Umstead Residence Hall.
Reward . . .
After putting out extra effort and taking the risks necessary to complete honors work, you expect that you'll be rewarded with more than the usual results. Exceptional, challenging, small classes are their own reward, but you expect more--and you should.
We guarantee that you will receive the recognition you deserve. Your diploma and transcript will both state prominently that you graduated from the University Honors Program. You will receive special recognition in the commencement program, in the campus newspaper, and at the annual Honors Recognition Ceremony. Honors professors will likely write you personal and supportive recommendations for graduate or professional school or employment. If you are qualified, we will support you for national awards like the Fulbright and Pulitzer, both of which have been won by recent ECU graduates.
Opportunity . . .
Entering freshmen should have a 3.5 unweighted GPA, minimum SAT score in the 1200 range, and a class rank in the top 10 percent. All qualified students, who have been admitted to ECU, are invited to join the University Honors Program.
Transfer students from a four-year university should have a 3.3 GPA and transfer students from a community college should have a 3.5 GPA. Also, current ECU students with at least a 3.3 GPA may apply to the program. You may apply on ECU Onestop; under tools you will see a link to apply for the Honors Program.
