Planning Resources

In 2010, ECU adopted the logic model for institutional strategic planning.  This framework is used to articulate and align operations, goals, measures, and results in support of ECU's Strategic Directions and Mission.  ECU uses the logic model to:

  • Define our work in terms of the final outcomes that we need to accomplish to demonstrate that we are achieving our strategic directions and Mission

  • Align key performance indicators to the established outcomes (broad institutional or societal impact) to ensure that we are focusing on results

  • Develop appropriate outputs (results of specific activities) that can be monitored on an ongoing basis to allow us to draw inferences and make course corrections, as appropriate

  • Integrate and align outputs and outcomes

  • Facilitate systemic and systematic ongoing assessment and quality enhancement efforts

A logic model template has been developed to facilitate this process.  It can be downloaded here.  A logic model can be developed by asking the following questions:

  1. What is the current situation that we intent to impact?

  2. What will it look like when we achieve the desired situation or outcome?

  3. What behaviors need to change for that outcome to be achieved?

  4. What knowledge or skills do people need before the behavior will change?

  5. What activities need to be performed to cause the necessary learning?

  6. What resources will be required to achieve the desired outcome?
