Blackboard

Blackboard is the web based course management system ECU uses to deliver online course material. Blackboard provides a platform upon which instructors can teach using any theory or model for delivering content to enhance student achievement.

Centra

Centra is a web conferencing learning program that provides a virtual classroom using live and recorded sessions. Centra provides voice, video, and graphics in a structured online learning environment replicating a traditional classroom. It enables groups to work faster and more effectively by automating critical learning and training initiatives online through virtual classrooms, online meetings and Web conferences.

Use:

• Promotes community
• Virtual classes
• Blended, hybrid learning
• Incorporate audio in a presentation
• Incorporate video in a presentation
• Record the sessions
• Markup and record notes
• Anyplace, anytime classes held with access to a PC
• Students can ask direct questions

Moodle

Moodle is a course management system (CMS), a free, open source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities.

Use:

• Enhance regular f2f courses
• Teach distance learning courses
• Enhance distance education courses
• Offer hybrid courses
• Achieve teaching goals such as supplementing lecture materials and increase contact with students
• Address diverse learning styles

Second Life

Academic Outreach Technology Services supports the campus rollout of this virtual world software, providing project management, technical leadership, administrative support, faculty support and training, student support and training, and total project development and implementation. In addition, AOTS responsibilities include scripting as needed to provide custom solutions for faculty. The Second Life environment provides a synchronous and asynchronous learning platform for ECU faculty and students. Training for Second Life is now covered during the Out and About sessions, along with the group training we offer each semester.

The ECU SL campus houses fifteen buildings, including a virtual library helpdesk that houses both Joyner and Laupus libraries, Career Services resources and a mock courtroom with upcoming sessions. An ITCS virtual Helpdesk and DE student bookstore are under construction. http://hawk.aos.ecu.edu/secondlife/
