East Carolina University is the third largest of the 16 universities that make up the University of North Carolina system and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. ECU is entering its second century of service, having opened its doors in 1907 as the East Carolina Teachers College. ECU has a long and rich history of serving members of the armed services and their dependents, and its campus in Greenville, NC is strategically located near several military installations. ECU began offering courses and programs away from campus in 1947 and at one point enrolled more Marines than any other school in the nation. With the advent of the Internet in the 1990’s, ECU began offering degree programs online, and now offers more distance education programs than any other school in the state.
