Race is defined as “a group of people related by common descent or heredity.” Ethnicity is defined as “a group classification in which members share a unique social and cultural heritage passed on from one generation to the next.” Race or ethnicity discrimination involves subjecting someone to unequal treatment because of his or her race or ethnicity.

Examples of inappropriate conduct based on race or ethnicity include, but are not limited to: refusal to hire a qualified individual because of the individual’s race or ethnicity and disparaging remarks about an individual’s race or ethnicity.

ECU’s policies which prohibit harassment and discrimination on the basis of race and ethnicity include the Racial and Ethnic Harassment Policy, the Equal Employment Opportunity Plan and the Notice of Nondiscrimination.
