Academic Credit for Military Experience: The ACE Guide

Students who have satisfactorily completed basic military training may receive credit for Hlth 1000 and one hour of exercise (EXSS) upon submitting a DD214, SMART or AARTS transcript to the Office of the Registrar.  Students who have completed service schools while on active duty with the military may request an evaluation through the Office of the Registrar.  Credit will be awarded upon the recommendation and review of the appropriate academic department.

Please note that East Carolina requires that ½ of the courses in a major be completed at East Carolina, that ½ of the hours for a degree (e.g., 60 hours of a degree requiring 120 hours) be completed at a senior (four-year) college or university, and that a minimum of 30 hours be completed at East Carolina.  Credit awarded for military experience does not count toward credit from a senior institution.

Military Credit – Frequently Asked Questions

Q:      I have misplaced my DD214, SMART, or AARTS transcript, how do I request a new document?

R:     You may request a new document by visiting one of the following websites:

AARTS - http://aarts.army.mil/

Q:      I have a copy of my certificate of completion for basic training; may I use this document to receive military credit?

R:      No, you must have a DD214, SMART, or AARTS transcript.

Q:     How does East Carolina evaluate the SMART or AARTS transcript?

R:      In accordance with Faculty Senate Resolution #04-20 (stated below), the Office of the Registrar will submit your military experience, along with the ACE recommendation to the appropriate discipline.  The department will review the recommendation and return the evaluation to the Office of the Registrar with a decision.  East Carolina is not required to award credit based on service school(s); however, you may submit your documents for review.
