Faculty Reassignment Awards

Sponsored and administered by the Division of Research, Economic Development, and Engagement in partnership with the Academic Affairs and Health Sciences Divisions.

Faculty Reassignment Awards (FRA) provide funds to departments to reassign faculty effort during the academic year, and thereby provide dedicated time to apply for extramural funding in support of research and creative activities. Faculty members in either 9 month or 12 month appointments are eligible to apply in order to “buy out” teaching and service assignments, thereby increasing the time available to prepare and submit an application for extramural funding. The applicant must present a well-defined project and supporting evidence that will form the basis of a proposal for extramural funding. A specific funding opportunity, sponsor, and deadline for proposal submission must be identified. In FY2017, 6/18 applications were funded for a total of $30,000.

  • Applicants are required to engage an advisory panel that will advise the investigator on development of the project and critique the proposal prior to submission.
  • Applicant must define a timeline for internal review of the research/creative activity proposal prior to submission of the application for extramural funding.
  • Funds will be provided to departments. No summer salary for 9-month faculty is provided.
  • Only one Faculty Reassignment Award to support one faculty member’s reassigned time per project will be awarded, regardless of the number of faculty on the research team.
