East Carolina's MD in 7

play videoDr. Joseph Zanga, MD.
Jefferson-Pilot Distinguished Professor
in Primary Care and Assistant Dean
for Generalist Programs, BSOM

There are a limited number of white coats available for MD in 7 students in each incoming class of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. These elite students can complete their undergraduate and medical training in seven years instead of the typical eight.

Enrolling in the highly competitive MD in 7 program allows students in certain majors to apply to the Brody School of Medicine at the end of their sophomore year. If accepted, they'll begin medical school after their junior year and be awarded their bachelor's degree after successfully completing their first year of medical school.

To be considered for the MD in 7 program, students must apply to East Carolina and complete the inquiry form on the Succeed Sooner web site indicating that they are interested in the MD in 7 program. If they have an SAT score of 1200 or higher and a high school GPA of at least 3.5, they will be invited to meet with a special adviser to discuss the MD in 7 program and all of the other benefits and opportunities East Carolina's prehealth advising program affords premed majors.

By completing their freshman and sophomore years with a GPA of 3.5 or higher overall and in premed courses, MD in 7 participants will be allowed to take the Medical College Admission Test and compete for one of the MD in 7 slots in the Brody School of Medicine. Students who score a 1300 or higher on the combined verbal and math sections of the SAT may be eligible to waive the MCAT. Please note that only North Carolina residents are eligible for admission to the Brody School of Medicine through this program.

Students not awarded one of the MD in 7 slots are still great candidates for medical school thanks to the excellent preparation the program offers: premed advising and special program features such as workshops, shadowing medical school faculty, learning through service opportunities, and membership in the undergraduate premed association. They may also be able to earn an MD in seven years by completing their undergraduate work through the Degree in Three program.

Additional prehealth information is available through the Academic Enrichment and Allied Health.
