This course will focus on Senegalese Literature and film from the 1960's to the present. We will look at how literature reproduces a society or vice versa. Attention will be paid to issues of tradition versus modernity, colonialism, gender relations, immigrations and the construction of a Senegalese literary tradition. The course will have two components. The first two weeks will be an online survey and discussions of the readings. The second part will be an onsite comparative study of the literature and the society. We will travel to Senegal and spend three weeks exploring the country and connecting our findings to the representations of the culture in the texts we have read. We will visit families, historical sites, schools, women's organizations, and government offices. The study abroad component of the course will help students contextualize readings and critically analyze literary works and how they help in the misrepresentation of a given society. Since the texts read in class will be works in translation, it will be especially interesting to have a first-person account of the culture. This program not only offers the students the possibility of taking a wider variety of courses during the summer than ECU presently makes available, but also, invaluably, allows them to do so in an environment in which they are completely immersed in the Spanish language. In addition, they have the chance to experience sights, sounds, and cultural interactions first-hand that they otherwise might not be able to have access to.  Faculty Director Paul Fallon has spent much of his career studying Mexican literature and culture, is a product of such a system of study abroad, and has already taken one group to this site with great results. The faculty director's role is to act as organizer and cultural guide to a degree, to aid in the students' becoming comfortable with their new environment, and to address any concerns that might arise from initial interactions in Mexico, with the students' host families, and with CEPE. Additionally, the faculty director may supplement the course offerings at CEPE with additional extracurricular work, as needed. fallonp@ecu.edu
