Brian Mullis

Brian T. Mullis co-founded Sustainable Travel International (STI) in 2002. Its mission is to promote responsible travel and facilitate the travel and tourism industry's move toward sustainability by providing programs that help travelers and travel-related companies protect the environmental, socio-cultural and economic values of the places they visit, and the planet at large. Under his leadership, STI launched the first global non-profit sustainable tourism certification program and the first carbon footprint calculators in North America. The organization has also become a leader in sustainable tourism development within five short years and has begun to achieve its goal in helping sustainability become a mainstream concept within the travel and tourism industry. This is done by working with clients such as Continental Airlines, The Travel Corporation, Virtuoso, National Geographic, and World Wildlife Fund to name a few.

Mullis has over 19 years of experience in the travel and tourism industry. He began his career spending summers during college working in national parks in Wyoming, Montana and Utah. More recently, Mullis was the President and owner of The World Outdoors, an international adventure travel company specializing in active and eco-travel. During his consulting career, he has assisted numerous travel and tourism companies of all sizes in the areas of sustainable tourism development, business and program development, sales and marketing, finance and budgeting, and management and operations. Past clients include Maui Pineapple and Land Company, Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, Natural Habitat Adventures, Quark Expeditions, O.A.R.S. and many others. Most recently, STI has engaged in the development of a series of best practices as part of a national Renewable Energy and Tourism Initiative in partnership with East Carolina University, the University of Colorado at Boulder Energy Initiative and the National Renewable Energy Lab.

Mullis has degrees in Recreation Management, Psychology and Business and spends his free time traveling abroad, exploring the backcountry and enjoying quality time with friends and family.
