Community Outreach Interests

My involvement with communities reflects a deep interest in urban regeneration, heritage preservation and sustainable development. I have worked with many communities, practitioners and academics to craft planning policies, architectural guidelines and urban design conceptual schemes that would help create more livable, sustainable and green built environments. I am particularly interested in helping communities revitalize their downtowns, waterfronts, and public spaces and revive their role as centers for cultural and heritage tourism.

Research Interests

My research contributes to a pioneering generation of urban design research that investigates the relations between physical, social, historical, and cultural dimensions of city spaces. It revolves around the study of the dialectics of form and function with an emphasis on the social logic governing the generation of urban space both on macro-and-micro levels. Specific research interests include urban streetscapes, college campus improvements, historic preservation, and skyscraper geography. My work is generally grounded in qualitative human-centered approaches to research. My interests in studying urban revitalization revolve around analyzing social relations in space, the ways in which people make claims on space, and the way public policy is articulated with city building. I focus on questions such as: How do changing environmental conditions, spatial configurations and physical characteristics of city spaces affect different populations and the role of professionals in shaping and reshaping the urban pattern?
