Community Outreach Interests

My interests lie in the development of infrastructure to support tourism through sustainable means. My community outreach efforts focus on examination of a market in terms of business decision making and return on investment considering preservation, conservation, recycling and green initiatives in general for hotels, resorts, restaurants and other tourism industry associated businesses. I have also worked extensively (sabbatical) with the Recreation Division of the United States Forest Service developing a national workshop for public and private ventures on U.S. Forest Service lands. I have been a Visiting Scholar of the National Tourism Foundation. Currently I am a member Board of Directors of the Tourism Education Foundation of North Carolina. Before moving to ECU in 2007, I was a member of the Board of Directors of the Memphis Convention and Visitor Bureau (MCVB), the MCVB's Educational Foundation board, the Metropolitan Memphis Hotel and Lodging Association and the Tennessee Hotel and Lodging Association. I am currently a Commissioner for AH & LA's Certification Commission and am a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Hotel & Lodging Education Foundation and a member of the Educational Institute of AHLA Faculty Advisory Board.

At ECU, our Hospitality Management Department examines a variety of sustainable tourism areas through our three concentrations, lodging, food and beverage and meetings and conventions.

Research Interests

My research interests focus on the development of case studies that examine tourism and hospitality development. In that effort, I have and continue to concentrate on both rural and urban tourism development that includes accommodations, food service, attractions and transportation.
