New Security Devices

Carley Wegner, WNCT-TV

Nov 5, 2004

It's something that no college campus can ignore.... crime. Director for Wireless and Mobile Computing, Dr. Barry Duvall, says, “Kids need some kind of protection.” And that protection is now the size of a keychain. Duvall says, “ Its something small that you automatically carry with you, you don't want another device to have to carry or possibly forget.”

With this   device and the help a computer, you can walk around campus or anywhere this system is offered and feel safer.

So this is how it works, if you feel like your in danger you push a button on your security keychain, the information then goes receivers, the receivers then send the information to a computer and that’s how they figure out exactly where you are.

Dr. Duvall and his team feel this particular piece of technology will benefit everyone and not just the students. “I think it's important because were trying to find mobile solutions, were always on the move and what we can do is protect them as much as possible when their in their own environments and that could be on campus or in the community or in their field anywhere.”

Now, the system isn't up and running yet, but Dr. Duvall says his staff is working over time to get it done. Dr. Duvall says right now his team is in the research phase of the project. They will meet November 18th to discuss security issues.
