The Program in Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) at East Carolina University supports the University's Writing Intensive (WI) Course Requirement. The WI course requirement for every student who graduates from ECU is a 12-hour requirement, which includes ENGL 1100, ENGL 1200, and two more upper division WI courses. At least one of the upper division WI courses must be in the student's major.

The WAC Program oversees all WI courses. All WI courses must be granted that status by the cross-disciplinary WAC Committee. Such courses must follow one of the approved models for WI courses.

The University Writing Program oversees all WI operations including course approval, faculty training, writing consultant training, and development of additional programs, such as the Online Writing Lab.
