Capital is always a serious concern for early stage companies. The EI facilitates Eastern North Carolina - Investor Network (ENC – IN) meetings, where companies present to angel investors. The EI also helps entrepreneurs prepare and network with angel investors, venture capitalists, and other entities supporting early stage innovations. In addition, the EI co-facilitates and co-sponsors a Business Plan Competition and an annual Entrepreneurship Summit. The EI provides an opportunity for innovative individuals to become informed about product development, capital resources, and corporate formation that support early stage technologies through a lunch network and speaker series called the Pirate Entrepreneurs.
The Eastern NC – Investor Network (ENC-IN) is a group of “accredited investors” that meets to examine and discuss equity investments in private companies. The network has met since the first ECU Venture Forum that was initiated in January 2002 and was originally sponsored by Ward & Smith, SBTDC and ECU. For three years the Forum was an annual event that gave 5 companies an opportunity to present to investors. RSM McGladrey joined Ward & Smith as a co-sponsor from 2003 to 2004. During May 2005 the ENC-IN began meeting monthly for lunch to review one or two company presentations per month through 2009. In recent years investors meetings are on an “as needed” basis and they do not follow a set schedule. These meetings include only “accredited investors.”*
Since 2002, over $18 million has been invested by private individuals and networks in companies associated with ENC-IN seeking private equity in eastern NC.
*An “accredited investor” is defined by the US Securities and Exchange Commission under the Securities Act of 1933 in Rule 501 Regulation D.
