Kieran J. Shanahan of Raleigh, NC, is a 1979 graduate of East Carolina University (BSBA cum laude) and UNC School of Law (1982). He was first elected to the Board of Trustees in 2011 by the Board of Governors and became Chairman in July, 2017. Kieran is the Managing Partner of Shanahan McDougal, PLLC, where he practices in the areas of complex business disputes and general corporate matters. Kieran spent five years as an Assistant United States Attorney, prosecuting white collar crimes in North Carolina and Georgia. Kieran served as the Secretary of the NC Department of Public Safety during the McCrory Administration. He served four terms on the Raleigh City Council and was Finance Chair for the North Carolina Republican Party. Currently, Kieran is Chairman of the NC Property Rights Coalition and a Board Member of the Centennial Authority, which oversees the PNC arena in Raleigh.
Kieran is married to Christina (Tina) Alvarado Shanahan, a Rear Admiral in the US Navy (RC) and Multiple World and National Champion equestrian. They have three children: Kate, Jimmy, and Patrick.
