ECU has a comprehensive  recycling program to reduce waste and minimize the University's impact on local landfills. Not only is this is a state mandated program, it’s an important thing to do. This program has been in place and expanding for 14 years.  Last year we recycled 1.2 million pounds.

We have a recycling programs in our residence halls and our academic buildings.  There is a set of collection bins on each floor of each academic building.  Each set is serviced once per week.  Inside collection includes paper, shredded paper, confidential pick-ups, and commingled drink containers.  In Residence Halls, paper is collected from lobbies and commingled recycling is collected from trash rooms on most floors by Housekeeping.  The commingled recyclables are brought outside and picked up daily.

An oil recycling program as part of our fossil fuel reduction program and use remanufactured oil in our vehicle fleet.

In partnership with the students, there is a Give-n-Go program to recover/reuse items the residents discard when they move out each year.  This helps the needy and keeps tons of reusable items out of the landfill.

Our concrete and other building materials are sent to a recovery process and not processed in the normal refuse stream.

Limbs are chipped and used as mulch in our more natural areas.

We have a pilot program that we started at the football games this year.

Dining processes their cooking oil through a recycler.

Our student oriented participation includes Give-n-Go, Earth Day at Barefoot on the Mall, Books for Africa, Move-in-Weekend, and SGA's Campus-Wide Recycling Drive (includes America Recycles Day).
