Centennial Calendar
October 2008
In 1954, the Supreme Court's landmark ruling to desegregate public schools would leave no corner of education untouched. East Carolina vigorously debated the ruling and the mark of change would be the removal of the word "white" from the East Carolina charter. In the summer of 1957, African American teachers enrolled in summer courses. In the early 1960s, before the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, full-time students would begin to reflect a diverse population of education seekers from eastern North Carolina and beyond.
In October 2008, "50 Years of Diversity" will celebrate, in conjunction with a variety of Homecoming activities, a timeline of diversity events from 1957-2007. Diversity displays will be prominently placed throughout the campus and an event will be held to further showcase some of the stories of diversity at East Carolina from students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
