Engagement and Outreach Scholars Academies
The ECU Engagement and Outreach Scholars Academies develop students and faculty to plan and conduct the scholarship of engagement. The Academies include EOSA (faculty), SEOSA (graduate students), ECS EOSA (EC Scholars) and MEOSA (focused on engagement with the military. After a peer selection process, scholars attend a series of workshops, complete a research proposal, and implement the research with a community partner. SOE
The Scholarship of Engagement is produced by faculty with their partners, frequently as co-authors. Includes professional presentations and publications along with research studies of partnerships, community presentations and reports, policies, and other recognized products.
SOO
Scholarship of Outreach is produced by faculty about their research in the community. Includes professional presentations and publications along with research studies of consultant type relationships, community presentations and reports, policies, and other recognized products.
SOTL
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is produced by faculty about pedagogical tools such as service learning, community based courses, fieldwork, internships, and other community learning experiences. Includes professional papers and presentations, curriculum development, assessment of student learning, and action research disseminated through reports, curriculum materials and/or faculty development workshops.
Purpose of the Engagement and Outreach Scholars Academies
The Academies' purpose is to increase participants' knowledge, motivation, and capacity to secure research funding and conduct scholarly engagement within engagement, outreach, and curricular engagement. The Academies allow key external stakeholders to partner with ECU faculty and improve the quality of life for eastern North Carolina and beyond. By the end of the Academy, participants will:
- Identify the ECU resources for partnerships
- Evaluation current ECU partnerships for scholarly opportunities
- Summarize the key components of working effectively with communities
- Develop an engaged scholarship research agenda by working with an assigned coach
- Implement a research project developed during the Academy

Eligibility and Application Process
Faculty who are permanently tenured or on tenure track with any length of service or who are fixed term with five years of employment at ECU may apply. EOSA participants include new and junior faculty and experienced faculty who want to develop expertise in engaged scholarship.The goal of the selection process is to select an interprofessional cohort, representative of the colleges and schools at ECU. The selection committee reviews nominations based upon the faculty member's documentation of:
- An active research agenda and responsibility for conducting research
- A clear desire to incorporate engaged scholarship into this research agenda
- The capacity to disseminate the results of their research to a broad audience
- A commitment to actively participate during the fall workshops, to implementation of the research proposal in spring and summer, and to continued support of engaged scholarship at ECU
- A desire to mentor students in the engaged research process
To apply, complete the application (Click here for application) and forward to your Dean or Center Director. The application with the Dean or Center Director's letter will be returned to the faculty member. If the Dean or Center Director supports the application, he or she will complete the recommendation found in the application and return it to the faculty member. The faculty member will submit the complete application packet as an e-mail attachment to Beth Velde (veldeb@ecu.edu) by the third Friday in March.
Applications will be reviewed by the EOSA Selection Committee, composed of EOSA alumni and engaged scholars. Successful applicants will be notified by the second Friday in April.
