ECU Climate Survey

The ECU Climate Survey was distributed in the Spring of 2007.  Information on the survey results is now available on the Web Site for the Office of Institutional Diversity. Please visit this site for a PowerPoint on the survey results and continued updates on the planning and changes that will come from the survey results.

The Campus Climate Survey was recommended by members of the Chancellor’s Diversity Council to be applied to the ECU campus community.

As part of the survey creation ECU hired a consulting firm, Rankin and Associates, to administer the survey and analyze the data. Over the last several years, this nationally known firm has administered about 60 climate surveys at various universities across the country. ECU is the first university in the South to carry out a climate survey with Rankin and Associates.

The ECU Climate Survey results will be used in the following ways:
  • to assist the university in developing recommendations for inclusion and managing diversity on our campus;
  • to assist all areas of the campus in focusing their efforts to make the ECU campus inclusive and welcoming for all.
  • To provide important information about our campus climate and enable us to improve the environment for working and learning at the University.

More information on the start of the Survey can be found in a "talking points" file here and an informative PowerPoint presentation here. A copy of the letter to the campus community from Chancellor Ballard can be found here.

Committee History and Background

Chancellor Steve Ballard created the Chancellor’s Diversity Council in April of 2006. The council consists of representatives from across the university, including faculty, staff, and students. The current task of the Chancellor’s Diversity Council is to review and amend as necessary, the University’s Diversity Framework and the 2004 Diversity Strategic Plan.

This is an advisory group and will play a major role in the further development of diversity throughout East Carolina University. The Chancellor’s Diversity Council is a independent entity and advises the Chancellor on how the university can best address diversity issues. As such, the Chancellor’s Diversity Council is a additional resource to areas like Office of Equal Opportunity and Equity.

University Diversity Vision

East Carolina University recognizes that diversity and respect for human difference within the academe is a key source of intellectual vitality and innovative spirit. The University seeks to promote diversity on campus, nurture it, and realize its full benefits within the context of teaching, learning, and living. ECU will focus on diversity not as an end unto itself, but rather a means to an end of respect for and unity among members of university community.

University Diversity Goal

East Carolina University is committed to enriching the lives of students, faculty, and staff by providing a diverse academic community where the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and perspectives is an active part of living and learning. The university seeks to create an environment that fosters the recruitment and retention of a more diverse student body, faculty, staff, and administration. The university defines diversity in a broad context to include the representation, integration, and interaction of different races, genders, ages, ethnicities, cultures, national origins, abilities, religions, sexual orientations, intellectual positions, and perspectives. The university desires a pluralistic academic community where teaching, learning, and living occurs in an atmosphere of mutual respect in pursuit of the excellence. The university considers diversity, the opportunities afforded by a diverse learning environment, and the authentic interaction among people from various backgrounds and persuasions to be essential elements in achieving excellence in academia.
