Preventing Sexual Harassment (PSH) & Preventing Employee Discrimination (PED) Training FAQs

Is the training mandatory for every ECU employee?
Yes.  If you are a part time or full time staff or faculty member or a student employee
(See 1a for the only exemption), you are required to complete the programs within 45 days of being hired.  As an institutional priority, our goal is to have each member of our community aware of harassing and/or discriminatory behavior.

1a. Am I exempt from this requirement if I have  participated in sexual harassment or discrimination training before?
Only supervisors and managers that have attended the mandatory Equal Employment Opportunity Institute (EEOI) 1 ½ day course (sponsored by the Office of State Personnel) within the last two years are exempt from the online training.

Do I have to take the training more than once?
You are only required to take the initial PSH/PED training modules one time.  However, every two years you will be required to take a refresher course.  The first refresher course will be available in August of 2009.

Why is the training mandatory for all employees?
As we seek to build and maintain an inclusive, respectful and equitable environment for our diverse community at ECU, becoming aware of and having the knowledge to identify harassing and/or discriminatory behavior is one of the first steps in promoting such an environment. As members of ECU’s community, we are all share in the responsibility of building a climate free of harassment and discrimination –not just those in supervisory positions.

What about new hires? Is it necessary for new employees to complete the modules?
All new employees should complete the training programs within the first 45 days of being employed with the university. SPA employees will receive information regarding the programs during New Staff Seminar.  Managers and supervisors of EPA employees will be responsible for communicating the mandate to new hires as necessary.

If I am a manager or supervisor, how can I be facilitative in having my staff fulfill the requirements?
Supervisors and managers (or any delegate of their choice) are responsible for ensuring that each staff or faculty member in their department/unit has completed the course. Individuals in leadership should schedule times for employees to complete the programs.

Data regarding an employee’s completion of the programs is maintained in the Equity office.  Supervisors may request completion information by contacting the Equity office at 328-6804 or equity@ecu.edu.

What if my staff is technologically challenged and need a face-to-face training session?
If your staff is not comfortable using the online training modules, you may request a face-to-face training session with the Equity office by sending an e-mail to equity@ecu.edu.

Can employees complete the programs at his/her desk or work area?
Yes. Supervisors and managers should schedule times for their employees to complete both programs.

What if I don’t have a room or a space for my employees to complete the training programs?
To reserve a room for your employees to complete the programs, please contact the Equity office at equity@ecu.edu or 328-6804.

What happens after completing the training programs and the mastery test?
After each employee successfully completes the mastery test, he/she should print the completion certification for his/her personal records. The Equity office is automatically notified that an employee has completed the programs. If a manager or supervisor would like to request the completion information for a dept or unit, he/she may request the information from the Equity office.

What if employees do not successfully complete the mastery test?
If employees supply wrong answers for more than 3 out of 15 questions (80%), the mastery test must be retaken. An employee must continue to take the test until he/she receives at least an 80%.

Do employees have to complete a program within one “sitting” or can he/she do part now and log on to continue the program later?
It is recommended that employees complete a program in one “sitting.”  Since each program takes approximately an hour to complete, we suggest that supervisors and managers schedule at least one hour per program for each employee.
