What made you choose ECU?
ECU actually wasn’t my first choice. I got into a school that I thought was the school of my dreams. I was all set to go there and then literally at the last minute, I decided to stay here and go to ECU. It was a gut feeling, and I knew I needed to follow it. It ended up being the best decision I could have made. By staying here, I was able to accomplish so much more. I’m really trying to make a difference in the area, here. I guess that by living in Greenville for a while, I became so accustomed to ECU that I sort of took it for granted. I didn't notice the possibilities that were right in front of me.
What is something most people don't know about you?
Probably that I founded a nonprofit organization called the Escape Foundation. Our goal is to provide opportunities for underprivileged and minority youth (middle and high school students specifically) in the Greenville area. The program is based on six different focus points: Engagement, Empowerment, Etiquette, Effort, Excellence, and Environment. I want to provide a broad range of support to help them become effective citizens. Some of the things we are hoping to provide are tutoring opportunities, peer support groups for single mothers; environmental education; access to government officials and leaders within the community, and even business training. The Escape Foundation is designed to influence youth in a positive matter and prepare them for their next step in life. I need all the help I can get from students and other organizations to make this thing a success! Anyone who wants to help can email me.
What are some of the things you are proud of at ECU?
I am very proud of the inclusiveness of this university. I'm also proud of the emphasis ECU puts on leadership. It makes me excited for the future. I believe that we Pirates are so much more than what they think we are. We are innovators, doctors, entrepreneurs. We are leaders and each of us is capable of achieving great things.
What do you think you will miss most about ECU?
I'm only a sophomore, I don't even want to think of leaving yet! There is so much more for me to experience here for me to know everything that I will miss. As of right now, I will definitely miss the friends and connections I have made. Not to mention the extremely reasonable price of tuition!
