KYLE BRADLEY NICHOLS of Winston-Salem, 18, has been accepted at Wake Forest University medical school and will begin studies in July. Kyle began college at Forsyth Technical Community College at 14, transferred to ECU two years later and received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry here last spring.

JENNIE EILEEN KOONTZ is associate project manager for the Wake Forest University Department of Family and Community Medicine. Her duties involve planning, development and implementation of grants and giving assistance in writing papers and grant proposals. MATTHEW GILLESPIE has begun doctoral studies in music composition at the University of Pittsburgh. He received a full scholarship and stipend. LINDSAY HALE is on the staff of the School of Theatre at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She has worked in the costume department of the Santa Fe Opera for the past two summer seasons. MATTHEW ROBERT SCULLY of Greenville joined the New Orleans Opera Chorus and made his solo debut singing a role in Léhar’s operetta The Merry Widow. LESLEY SUEANN SHIRES of Fayetteville performed professionally as “Rosy” in Chicago and played in Cats in Ithaca, N.Y. JERMAINE SMITH of Winston-Salem was accepted into the master’s degree program in vocal performance at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. BRIANNE BEVERLY YOUNG of Virginia Beach toured with the National Players, playing the nurse in Romeo and Juliet and “Jocasta” in a single-play condensation of Sophocles’ Oedipus Trilogy. LAUREL WHITNEY MOULTON of Pleasant Hill, Ore., was hired by jazz organist Sarah McLawler to play bass, touring to Virginia and performing at the Lester Young Tribute Concert. KATIE MAUREEN SLAGLE was named a coordinator in the student life department at Catawba College in Salisbury. She is in charge of student judicial programs. ALLEN COLEMAN SMITH has joined the staff at the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce as vice president of operations. He is also a candidate for a master’s degree in economic development at ECU. ANTHONY AMMIRATI was appointed a state park ranger at Goose Creek State Park in Beaufort County. TAMMY LEE of ECU’s College of Education received a Distinguished Service in Science Education award from the N.C. Science Teachers Association. She was cited for her work for the N.C. Partnership for Improving Mathematics and Science. DANIEL LEON HARRELL of Elm City completed his first orchestral work which was read this spring by the University of Louisville Orchestra. ANDREA LYNN PETERSON of Wilmington had some of her illustrations selected for inclusion in the first 3x3 Student Illustrators Annual. She was one of 100 selected from among 538 international entrants. RACHEL ANNE PURMORT of Bethel Park, Pa., accepted a six-month contract as a dance performer with Holland Cruise Lines out of Hawaii. Susan received this year’s med school Faculty Award, and last year received the Most Outstanding Resident Award. SAMANTHA DEE “MANDEE” FOUSHEE (’02, ’05) was named project manager for ECU’s Center for Survey Research. COLLIN DAVID BATTEN of New York has joined forces with WILLIAM “BILLY SHARPE IV ’91 to develop a theatre company of New York City-based East Carolina alumni interested in writing and producing plays. They hope to create a stronger alumni network, as well as an ambassador program for future graduates of ECU theatre programs who intend to come to New York. SEAN ELLIOTT BERG of New York is director of concert operations for Manhattan Concert Productions and operations director for Artist Alliance International. MCP/AAI offers festival, workshop and performance opportunities in New York, San Francisco and Chicago, as well as in Europe for choirs, bands and orchestras. In April he made his Washington, D.C., professional conducting debut at the National Cathedral, leading 200 singers in a performance of Schubert’s Mass in G Major. She has been working as a rehabilitation specialist in Towson and plans to pursue a master’s degree in acupuncture next year. CAROLYN ANN WILBURN was named director of the eastern region Small Business and Technology Development Center at ECU. Established in 1985 as one of 11 regional centers in the UNC system, the SBTDC is the primary organization through which the state provides development and technical assistance to the business community. JENNIFER SHELTON LICKO of Greenville is a professional musician specializing in Celtic music, traditional in the British Isles. Since graduation she has studied in Scotland and Ireland and has recorded five CDs, including a collection of lullabies, Celtic Moonsongs and Caves of Gold, a compilation of songs sung in both Gaelic and English. ERICKA MARIE HEDGECOCK is assistant professor and international programs coordinator at UNC-Greensboro. She teaches in the Department of Interior Architecture and has been actively exhibiting her work nationally and internationally. She has also lived, studied and worked abroad, mostly in Ireland and Finland. CARRIE MAUD BURKERT KELLEY owns and operates a violin and viola studio in Concord and is also part owner of a landscape architecture firm in Harrisburg. TERESA WALLACE WINSLOW of Ayden, a family nurse practitioner, has joined the clinical staff at the ECU Physicians’ Firetower Medical Office. She was previously with Kinston Medical Specialists and worked as a nurse at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. She received her master’s degree and FNP certification from Duke University. DR. ALEX RAY KIRBY of New Bern is an interventional cardiologist in a single-specialty practice in New Bern with offices in Jacksonville and Morehead City. His wife, DR. MARY BANASZAK KIRBY, is a physician with New Bern Family Practice. The couple has two children, Nicholas and Claire. DR. TAMEL SADEK of Goodyear, Ariz., has a private solo medical practice and is the owner of a medical spa and wellness center. David was presented his Leo at a black-tie event held during a week-long Caribbean cruise in mid-January. JULIAN HOLT KORNEGAY of Louisburg, Franklin County Library system director, participated in the Oxford Round Table at the University of Oxford’s Pembroke College during March. The prestigious round table considers major issues in contemporary educational policy in the U.S., the United Kingdom and other nations. Holt led a panel on limits to press freedom and visited the Bodleian Library at Oxford, which he considers “the best library in the English-speaking world.” DR. PHILIP MICHAEL BROWN JR. of Wilmington has relocated to a private vascular surgery practice, Wilmington Health Associates. CARL JAMIESON REES of Greenville is working with the city’s 900-acre West Greenville redevelopment plan. Earlier, Carl was neighborhood services coordinator with the Greenville Police Department and before that, director of the post-Hurricane Floyd recovery program. He is married to MELISSA JANE DUVALL REES ’90, ’02, a lecturer in ECU’s child development program. They are the parents of two children, Cameron and Margaret. DR. WENDY JONES ’95, ’00 has joined the medical staff at Carolina Women’s Physicians in Greenville. Wendy, who participated in a medical mission in the Dominican Republic, completed her residency at the ECU medical school’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. WILLIAM MATTHEW “BILLY” GODWIN, formerly head baseball coach at Louisburg College, then pitching coach for the ECU Pirates, has been appointed ECU’s head coach. During his tenure at Louisburg, the team compiled a record of 262 wins and 85 losses. DR. IRENE MACE HAMRICK of Greenville is an assistant professor in the Brody School of Medicine. She was appointed geriatric fellowship director last year and received the six-year geriatric academic career award. Her article about Vitamin B12 appeared in Family Practice Recertification. DR. PATRICK EVERETTE KAVANAUGH of Chapel Hill is a physician with Triangle Family Practice, Duke University Affiliated Physicians, in Durham. He and wife Alison became first-time parents when Ella Grace was born last August. DAVID WILLIAM REICHELT of Chubbuck, Idaho, has served as sports director for KPVI-V since 1996, anchoring both nightly and weekday broadcasts. He has also been the radio voice for Idaho State University the past three seasons, calling both football and basketball for the Bengals.

Kevin’s broadcasting career began at ECU’s campus radio station, WZMB. DOROTHY JAYE WEEKS HUGHES of Bethel and husband LEON WESLEY HUGHES JR. ’03 announce the birth of their first child, Bailey Jayne, who arrived March 14. Dorothy is a teacher in the Pitt County school system. STEPHEN ROBERT BRODIE is the new project manager at the corporate office of WIMCO Corp. in Washington. He joined the construction firm in 2001 as a field superintendent. Stephen is currently completing requirements for a master’s degree in maritime history and nautical archaeology at ECU. He has been a scientific diving officer and worked on searching for, documenting and recovering shipwrecks. CHRISTOPHER LINWOOD COUDRIET, Franklin County manager, has received his third salary raise within the year, along with high praise for his performance from the county Board of Commissioners. LINDSEY ALLEN CRISP, CPA has been named president and chief operating officer of Carver Machine Works, Inc. in Washington. He most recently worked as a senior manager for Dixon Hughes PLLC, A Greenville-based accounting firm. CHERYLE FAY NABERHAUS of Bonita Springs, Fla., performed as principal horn in Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the Southwest Florida Symphony in Fort Myers, receiving standing ovations both nights. ROBERT SAMUEL “SAM” MATHENY JR. of Zebulon is general manager of News Over Wireless/Capitol Broadcasting Company New Media, based in Raleigh. In April Sam was inducted into the Academy of Digital Television Pioneers (DTV Academy), composed of individuals who have made a significant contribution to the development, success and promotion of digital content development and delivery. Sam led the team at CBC and WRAL-TV that launched the first local TV news application for mobile phones. Sam is married to TAMARA ABBOTT MATHENY ’94. STANTON EDWARD BLAKESLEE of Greenville is founding principal of Eye Integrated Communications. He returned to campus to discuss contemporary design with ECU graphic design students. KEVIN EUGENE VARNER of Greensboro was a featured actor with the N.C. Shakespeare Festival this season, playing “Duke Orsino” in Twelfth Night and “Cassio” in Othello. After leaving ECU, Kevin completed Harvard University’s MFA program in acting at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge. DONNA PAIGE BOYKIN HILL of Winterville has assumed duties as principal at Greenville’s Elmhurst Elementary School. She was formerly assistant principal at Grifton School. DR. JUDITH LAWRENCE OUTTEN is practicing community psychiatry in Phoenix and has completed her first children’s book, The Shoebox Kid, which is about a foster child who gets a home. She has also released her debut gospel CD, Where the River Meets the Ocean in the Sky. RABIAH MARYAM BARODOFSKY HODGES of Manteo is master weaver for Endless Possibilities, a studio where the fabric from thrift-store castoff garments is used to create scarves, rugs, purses and other items. She also teaches rag weaving to crisis victims and volunteers. The studio’s profits help to support the Outer Banks Hotline Crisis Intervention and Prevention Center. BRANDON JAMES MacGILLIS of Washington, D.C. is director of communications for the National Environmental Trust, one of the pre-eminent environmental advocacy organizations in the capital. He has also been involved in national and state political campaigns.

Previously he was chief corporate development officer and director of corporate affiliates for the international non-profit organization Up With People. RENEE ELAINE CUNDIFF NAUFUL of Sunrise, Fla. and husband Jeff welcomed their second child, Ciara Catherine, on Feb. 8. Recently Renee was re-elected chapter president of the Moms Club of Sunrise. She was also elected to her community’s homeowners association board. JAMES WINFIELD “JIM” PARKER of Greenville has joined the estimating staff at WIMCO Corp., a general building contractor in Washington which is licensed for construction in five states. CASSANDRA DARDEN BELL of Winterville is the author of After the Storm and Mississippi Blues, mass-market novels featuring African-American women overcoming domestic and personal difficulties. The books were published by BET Books’ Sepia imprint. Before choosing writing as her full-time career, Bell was a news anchor at WNCT-TV, Greenville. AMY LEE HINSON of Wilmington, a music teacher at Virgo Middle School, has earned National Board Certification in music. She plays oboe and English horn with the Wilmington Symphony. DR. JONATHAN HARRIS TAYLOR of Norfolk is a resident at Eastern Virginia Medical Center. He presented two papers at the American Urological Association’s Mid-Atlantic Section meeting, one of which was awarded third place for best paper. MICHAEL DAVID “MIKE” GILLIKIN of Greenville, eastern N.C. sales consultant for BETCO, has received the second annual Donnie Ray Tart Sales Award of Excellence. The award memorializes a 1969 graduate of the ECU School of Business who was BETCO’s all-time sales leader and is given to the highest-achieving salesperson each year. The company has established a $10,000 scholarship endowment at ECU in Tart’s memory. BETCO manufactures metal self-storage buildings with offices and plants in North Carolina and Tennessee. DR. D. SCOTT DONALDSON of Hendersonville is with Western Carolina Urological Associates, PA. He is part of a group who have purchased a summer camp to run as a non-profit program focusing on working with disadvantaged, inner-city boys (“children of promise”) while also serving traditional campers (“children of privilege”). Camp Arrowhead covers more than 230 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains and features a fishing creek, a blacksmithing program, a ropes course and challenging arts and crafts.

DR. WILLIAM ALFRED KREMER of Greensboro is a practicing physician at Medcentral in High Point. He and his wife BARBARA HARRIS KREMER ’88, ’91 have two young sons, Jacob, 5 and Benjamin, who arrived last August. GRADY COLEMAN BAILEY JR. ’91, ’93 is the 2005-06 Wachovia-Pitt County Schools Teacher of the Year. He has taught chemistry and physics at Conley High School for the past three years, following teaching positions in Martin County. Coleman is the son of two educators; his mother, MIRIAM VIRGINIA TAYLOR BAILEY ’67, ’84, now retired as a teacher and principal with the Pitt County schools, was nominated for Teacher of the Year during the 1970s. His father, GRADY COLEMAN BAILEY SR. ’54, ’58 ’64 is a veteran teacher at Tarboro High School and also works as a science/math consultant. The 2005-06 honoree is married to LYNN WORLEY BAILEY ’91, an occupational therapist. All the Baileys are residents of Farmville. MARILYN VIRGINIA BROWN GIBSON of Greenville has joined the Pitt County Community Foundation as an affiliate coordinator. She will provide administrative assistance to the local board and promote awareness of the foundation’s investment services. The foundation was organized in 1992 to enable philanthropy and building endowment funds for charitable purposes. It also manages other funds established by donors and non-profit organizations for the benefit of Pitt County. ISAAC WESLEY ROBINSON JR. ’91, ’95 of Willow Spring received the MBA degree from Strayer University last year. He is an administrative manager with Sprint. STACEY ANN HEDDLESTON ROSE and husband Albert C. “Pete” Rose III of Litchfield, Ohio, announce the birth of their second daughter, Charlotte Ann, on Sept. 28, 2004. ALICE ELIZABETH ZINCONE ’89, ’98 has turned her creative spirit toward the music of her roots as a member of a bluegrass-playing family. (Dad is Louis Zincone of the College of Business.) In 2003-04 she was music director for the play Millworker, which received press praise and during three runs in the Triangle and a mini-tour across the state. She and her partner, Rick Lafleur, collaborated on a CD of original and traditional bluegrass music released in June. Alice accompanied the Apple Chill Cloggers during their appearance at an international folk music and dance festival in Narni, Italy. Alice teaches K-5 art in the Wake County schools. DR. JOSHUA SONETT received national notice in March when he successfully led the surgical team which operated on former President Bill Clinton. The four-hour procedure resulted in the removal of scar tissue that had built up around Clinton’s heart following a quadruple bypass operation last year. Joshua is an associate professor of surgery at Columbia University and also directs the lung transplant program at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. He has taught at Columbia since 2001 and was rated one of New York’s best doctors in New York Magazine in 2002, 2003 and 2004. PATRICK JOSEPH KEOUGH exhibited his work in Ireland Travel Photographs, Landscapes and Portraits, at a one-artist show at the Council for the Arts in Jacksonville this summer. Patrick recalled his three months in Ireland for its hospitable, friendly people, beautiful scenery and “rich history.” Patrick is fine arts coordinator and instructor of photography at Carteret Community College. LT. COL. REGGIE SELBY retired from the Air Force at Peterson Air Force Base, Col., after 21 years of service, most recently as commander of the 21st Contracting Squadron. He is now entertainment editor at the Charlotte Observer. LESA CAROLYN ROGERS BROADHEAD of Stow, Ohio, is artistic director/choreographer for the Manchester Dance Ensemble of Akron. Her work in educating through dance about the Jewish Holocaust experience has been seen at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and in New York. ALISA FAY EVANS DEBNAM, dean of health programs at Fayetteville Technical Community College, was elected to the board of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. during the association’s conference in New Orleans in June. Alisa is a past president of the Junior League of Fayetteville. The 104-year old Junior League organization comprises 294 member Leagues in four nations. DANIEL NOLAN “DAN” NEIL of Los Angeles won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in the journalistic criticism category. He has written automotive reviews for numerous national magazines, including Car and Driver and Autoweek and was automotive reviewer for the New York Times before accepting his current post as a Los Angeles Times columnist. Among his previous awards have been the American Society of Newspaper Editors Award and the Houghton Mifflin Best American Sports Writing Award. (Dan was featured in a recent issue of EAST.) AMY CELESTE FORMYDUVALL MEMOLO of Lugoff, S.C., is a third grade teacher in the Kershaw County schools and has compiled a 22-year teaching career.
