The College of Fine Arts and Communication hosts hundreds of public performances and gatherings every year through its professional concert series, summer theatre program, dance performances, student musical ensembles, musical theatre productions, exhibitions, recitals, opera theatre, and events for youth.

East Carolina’s visual and performing arts programs are among the largest and most prestigious on the East Coast.

The School of Art and Design is one of the few places in the nation where sculpture students manage a working foundry, casting bronze, aluminum, and steel. Among the school’s significant holdings is the immense Dwight M. Holland Ceramics Collection, as well as a significant African art teaching collection.

The ECU Jazz Ensemble was selected by DownBeat magazine, the Smithsonian Institution, and the estate of Duke Ellington to bring one of Ellington’s lost works, “Three Cent Stomp,” back to life. The ensemble premiered the piece at the City Jazz Club in Orlando, Florida.

The School of Communication serves about 800 preprofessional journalists in a fast-paced setting using a state-of-the-art convergence newsroom.

The School of Theatre and Dance offers multiple productions of plays, musical theatre, and dance concerts throughout the year in McGinnis Theatre. Dance majors recently performed by invitation at a gala concert at Dance Chicago. Storybook Theatre continues to bring literacy-promoting productions to underserved schools across the region.

ECU offers diverse performing arts programs for families, school children, and the general public through the College of Fine Arts and Communication’s Family Fare, Arts Smart, and S. Rudolph Alexander Performing Arts Series.
