Michael King will lead students as president of the SGA

East Carolina University rising senior Michael King of Prince George, Virginia was sworn in July 18 as a member of the ECU Board of Trustees, a position he holds by virtue of his role as Student Government Association president.

King views this leadership position as a way to give back to the university and his peers. At the same time, he said, the experience will correlate with his classroom studies in financial management.

“I love this university and I love all of the opportunities that East Carolina has given me,” said King. “I figured this is the least I could do - to give back - and this is the best way I could have that opportunity.”

King was elected president of the SGA during the spring semester, along with three other students who make up the rest of the SGA executive board: vice president Jake Srednicki of Mahopac, New York, treasurer Kaitlyn Dutton of Greenville and secretary Katie Swanner of Huntersville. The board's focus will include plans for the new student union, campus safety and implementation of an SGA house of representatives.

The SGA version would operate similar to the United States House of Representatives. Approximately 300 ECU students are proposed to serve as representatives for their respective campus organizations.

“We want to advocate on behalf of the students (by) going to different organizations and seeing what they would like in the new student union,” said King. “We’re going to advocate as much as possible on their behalf.”

As a new member of the ECU Board of Trustees, King looks forward to learning from the proven leaders who make up the board. “At the end of the day, they want the same thing I want, which is the best for the university,” he said.

What is a project you are working on this year with the SGA?
One potential project is funding a transit program for the university neighborhood from the SGA budget. There won’t be just the Pirate Express going back to the apartment complexes, there would be stops going throughout the grid area to drop students off from downtown.

What do you feel is important about your leadership role?
I believe students’ voices should be heard. Students can get more involved with ECU's great academic programs and in the university community by joining the house of representatives and participating in neighborhood activities.

What about this upcoming year do you look forward to the most?
Working within the Board of Trustees. We're going to talk about what we really need, where we can cut and how to avoid increasing fees. Personally I know how tough it is with higher education. I’m already paying out-of-state tuition, so I feel for the students who say, “We can’t afford any more.”

What do you hope to learn from Board of Trustees meetings?
These are powerful people. It’s going to be really cool getting to work with them and see how they handle roles and challenges.

What is something cool about ECU that you wish you knew freshman year?
You can rent kayaks from the Rec Center to take out for a river day.

What advice to you have for fellow students?
Take advantage of every opportunity and soak in every second you have here because it will be over before you know it.

What are your personal goals as a student?
Just keeping grades up, finding a job after graduation in May and balancing between a good academic and social life.
