The Daily Reflector editorial: Finding help -- Physician shortage calls for swift action
If North Carolinians are concerned about finding a physician, the situation may be worse within the next couple of decades. The state is faced with a growing older population and a shrinking number of practicing physicians. By 2030, the number of physicians per state resident will have decreased by almost 21 percent, according to a draft report by the N.C. Institute of Medicine. During that period, physicians will be retiring and the population aging.

Bloomberg News:
Bush Iraq plan may be last chance to avoid history's 'dustbin'

The District, Virginia and Maryland are at the forefront of a growing nationwide effort to encourage or even require adolescent girls to receive the new cervical cancer vaccine -- the first vaccine ever developed specifically to prevent cancer…. Joseph Zanga, professor of pediatrics at East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine, favors the vaccine for girls who plan to be sexually active. But "mandating is the wrong approach to this issue," he said.

Dozens of adventurous souls gathered Jan. 18 for the annual Polar Bear Plunge into the icy waters of the Student Recreation Center’s outdoor pool. Jumpers earned free T-shirts, a chance to win a $250 Best Buy gift card and membership in the 2007 Polar Bear Club. Following a bitterly cold and rainy day, temperatures hovered just above freezing for the jump. Photos by Marc J. Kawanishi
