tvarner ECU alum qualifies for U.S. Open

ECU graduate and 2012 Conference USA Player of the Year Harold Varner III of Gastonia, N.C. qualified for the 2013 U.S. Open as an alternate from the sectional qualifier in Rockville, Md. Varner set state records as the first African American to win both the North Carolina Amateur at Greensboro and two months later, the Match Play Championship in Bermuda Run. tungaro ECU grad is 'Hot Dad' winner on Today Show

ECU medical school graduate Andrew Ungaro was featured June 14 on the Today Show with Kathie Lee and Hoda Kotb as winner of the iVillage Hottest Dad in America contest. Ungaro is a Navy doctor who lives in Portsmouth, Va. with his wife, Marley, and children Langley, 14, and Grey, 10. He was selected from among 1,500 entries narrowed down to nine categories that received 150,000 votes online. Read more...

tkelley Heavy rains affect water quality

Heavy rains from summer storms like Tropical Storm Andrea, which caused sudden downpours across the region June 7, can lead to stormwater runoff from rainwater that “runs off” the land rather than seeping into the ground, according to the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. That untreated water can affect water quality in streams, lakes and rivers around eastern North Carolina. t3pirateread Soldier's memoir selected for summer reading program

A memoir about a college student who founded a non-profit organization while on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps has been selected as the 2013 Pirate Read at East Carolina University. “It Happened on the Way to War” by Rye Barcott is set in the year 2000. Barcott was stationed in Kibera – a slum located in Nairobi, Kenya. While there, Barcott made a connection with the locals and in turn formed a bond with two specific people. Read more...
