SURGERY MILESTONE: Dr. W. Randolph Chitwood Jr. marked another milestone in robotically assisted surgery on Nov. 16, when he and his surgical team completed their 300th mitral valve repair using the da Vinci S. Surgical System. In May 2000, Chitwood, senior associate vice chancellor for ECU health sciences, performed the first total heart valve surgery using robotic technology in North America. He and his team have completed more robotically assisted mitral valve repairs than any other program in the world. (Photo by Cliff Hollis)
