Faculty Senate Approves Grading Policy Change
The changes in East Carolina University’s new grading policy will soon make possible the B-plus and the C-minus.
Members of the Faculty Senate voted Feb. 20 to approve changes to the university’s grading system that would add the plus and minus to letter grades. If approved by ECU Chancellor Steve Ballard, the new grading policy could take effect as early as summer 2008.
Wendy Sharer, chair of the committee charged with reviewing the policy change, said the plus/minus system would bring ECU in line with the grading systems of 15 other peer institutions.
“This scale is a more precise indication of student achievement,” Sharer said. “It allows for minor differences in letter grades, which is important for higher motivation for students.”
ECU faculty members have been researching the plus/minus question since Fall 2005. For more information, visit http://www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/fsonline/customcf/fsagenda/fsa207.htm.
