SUMMER ADVENTURES: Kayla Haywood of Chocowinity prepares to swab the throat of a chicken during a disease outbreak drill in June at the 14th Annual Ventures Into Health Careers Institute, sponsored by the Eastern Area Health Education Center. Watching her is fellow institute participant Kofi Monney of Greenville. Holding the chicken is Hank Reid of the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Thirty rising 10th graders from across eastern North Carolina participated in the two-week program, which gave students an opportunity to explore medicine, nursing, physical therapy, medical laboratory work and other health-related careers. The program included observation of health professionals at work, seminars and workshops on academic preparation for health careers, and personal development and self-awareness activities.
