Kean Takes Director Role

Linda Kean has been named director of the School of Communication after two years in the position on an interim basis. Her permanent appointment began July 1.

Kean, who holds a doctorate in communication arts from the University of Wisconsin, said technology upgrades and continued quality education for students are among her priorities.kean

In this permanent capacity, Kean said that she hopes to address the recent conversion to high definition television by upgrading the school’s camera and studio equipment to high definition over the next four years.

Becoming accredited by the Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications is also part of Kean’s plan to continue to attract quality students and faculty members to the school.

“Dr. Kean is a dedicated researcher and teacher who has provided outstanding service to the School of Communication and the ECU community,” said Dr. Laura Prividera, interim associate director of the school.

“Her leadership style and academic excellence will assist the School of Communication in continuing its exciting path to excellence.”

Another stated goal of Kean’s is to increase the school’s visibility on campus and in the community. She pointed out two events – the East Carolina Film Festival in spring 2009 and a workshop for almost 300 high school students in fall 2008 – that helped to promote the school while fulfilling needs in the community.

Kean joined ECU’s (then) communication department in 1998 as an assistant professor. In 2006, she helped establish a master’s degree program in the School of Communication.

Kean also holds an adjunct appointment in the Master of Public Health program.
