Financial assistance award canceled

GREENVILLE (Dec. 1, 2007) — East Carolina University Athletics Director Terry Holland, after a review by the university’s internal auditor, has canceled a financial assistance award to an ECU student who is a relative of Holland’s.

The non-athlete student, who began receiving the financial assistance from the Athletics Department in the fall semester of 2006, and who worked part-time for the department, had been awarded a total of $16,639.19 for tuition, fees, books, room and board. Holland canceled the award effective Sept. 30.

The auditor’s report concluded that there was no violation of a specific university policy, but that the arrangement was an inappropriate use of university funds.

Stacie Tronto, director of the ECU Office of Internal Audit, said there had been no attempt to conceal the award of financial assistance.

The funds for the assistance came from the Athletics facilities budget and did not affect the awarding of athletic scholarships or other Athletics Department operations.

Chancellor Steve Ballard said, “We are glad to have this matter resolved, and we are looking forward to continued upward momentum in our Athletics Department.”
