2009-2010 Parking Permit Fee Increase
On April 17, 2009 the Board of Trustees approved a parking permit fee increase effective July 1, 2009. This fee change amounts to $1 to $2 per month increase in the annual fees depending on the permit type.
ECU Parking and Transportation Services provides a zoned parking system with fees based on access to the core of campus. This fee structure provides the customer with three different price options. Commuter lots at Minges and Curry Court (Carol Belk Building) provide the lowest fee option with parking close to a Transit stop. Transit provides frequent service to these stops requiring only a short ride to core campus drop-off points. The Transit System is a vital component of the University’s environmental sustainability program by decreasing single vehicle trips and campus congestion.
We recognize this is not an ideal time for a fee increase. However, we have avoided fee increases for the past six years and have worked with the Board of Trustees to keep this fee increase as low as possible while still replacing the $3.9 million dollars in reserves lost due to a recent lawsuit. Over the past six years while expenses, including state employee salaries, have been increasing we have cut positions and other expenses rather than passing them on to the customer.
The revenue from this fee increase will help to prepare for future student growth and support the University’s mission to increase access and better serve the region. Parking and Transportation Services intends to continue improving customer service while providing the best parking at the lowest cost among comparable UNC Institutions.
