Benefits for ECU Police Officers

Education Incentive
Police Officers with an Associate's Degree receive 2% above their base starting salary; with a Bachelors Degree - 4% above their base starting salary; and with a Master's Degree - 6% above their base salary. This ONLY applies to officers at the time of hire.
Special Event/Overtime Pay
ECU Officers have the opportunity to work a large variety of on-campus events. Officers are entitled to overtime compensation at the rate of time-and-one-half (1 and 1/2) of their regular straight time pay rate when they work in excess of eighty-six (86) hours in a two-week period.
Shift Differential
Officers who work night-shift receive a 10% shift differential pay. Officers who work patrol rotate to night-shift every other month.
Holiday Pay
The University observes approximately eleven (11) holidays per year and eligible employees are paid for the holiday closings. Officers who work during an observed holiday will receive eight (8) hours of holiday time and one-half of the employee's regular rate (ex: an officer will be paid at time and 1/2 for hours worked on the holiday).
Uniforms and Equipment
Uniforms and equipment for all police officer ranks are furnished by the Department.
Tuition Waiver
Employees are allowed to take two (2) classes per academic year tuition free.
Textbook Loan Program
Full-time employees, their spouses and dependent children may borrow textbooks for classes.
Patrol Officers work 12-hour shifts, days and nights. Shifts are rotated once a month on the Monday of the first full week.
Leave Benefits
Vacation Leave is earned monthly and is based on the total length of NC State Service. Accrual rates begin at 94 hours and go up to 206 hours annually; Sick Leave is earned at a rate of eight (8) hours per month. Sick Leave will accrue if not used and can be used to advance your retirement date; and employees are allowed twenty-four (24) hours per year of Community Service Leave.
Medical Coverage
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). The University contributes the premium for employee coverage. Spouse and dependent coverage can be obtained for an additional premium.
Flexible Benefits
Additional benefits offered which include, Dental, Vision, Critical Illness, Cancer, Accidental Death & Dismemberment, Life Insurance, and Flexible Spending Accounts - that reimburse you for eligible dependent care or health care expenses, tax free.
Banking Programs
University employees are eligible to join the NC State Employees Credit Union and can receive special banking perks from Wachovia and BB&T.
Teachers and State Employees Retirement Plan
Employee contribution is 6% of annual salary; employer contribution varies year-to-year.
Supplemental Retirement Plans
All officers participate in the Supplemental Retirement Income Plan of NC (401K). The University contributes at least 5% of the officer's yearly salary.
