Important issues of interest at East Carolina University include the following:

  • Expanding the resource base for the University
  • Addressing critical infrastructure needs
  • Fulfilling our mission as a doctoral/research institution
  • Effectively branding the University

Key Capital and Operating priorities for 2009-20011 include the following:

CAPITAL

Life Sciences and Biotechnology Building: Just as in the 1950's when Research Triangle Park was established, North Carolina must continue to invest in a diversified, competitive economy fueled by knowledge-driven industries that provide higher-skilled, higher-paying jobs. Additionally, the direct correlation between successful economic regions and the presence of vibrant research universities is well documented. Prior strategic investments at NC State, Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill have fueled growth of diverse academic/industrial clusters in the Triangle, so too will similar investments at ECU drive growth in clusters targeted by economic developers throughout the east.

OPERATING

Indigent Care:  East Carolina University (ECU) is requesting $3 million of recurring funding in FY 2011 to reimburse the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) for direct costs incurred for providing medical care to indigent patients in eastern North Carolina. This will supplement the initial support of $2 million in FY 2010.

School of Dentistry:  The new School of Dentistry at ECU must have $11 million of recurring operating funds in FY 2011 in order to open the school and begin admitting students in the fall of 2011.

ECU Heart Institute:  No operating funds were garnered when funds were appropriated for the East Carolina Heart Institute building.  To this end East Carolina University originally requested recurring 2 million dollars in operating funds for the Institute. The UNC System Global Budget now contains a request for $300,000 of recurring funds in FY 2010 to operate the Institute. These funds are essential for the mission of the institute to be carried to fruition.

We will present more information here related to each topic, as well as ways you can assist the university with these topics.
