East Carolina University takes the protection of personal information very seriously and is diligent in protecting student information by taking all available measures to secure its network and data.
ECU Dowdy Student Stores is PCI compliant. So what does that mean? PCI stands for Payment Card Industry, and is a set of requirements set to ensure that all companies that process, store, or transmit credit card information from customers do so in a safe and secure way.
When customers make an in-store purchase, transactions are run through our secure point-of-sale system. If paying by credit or debit card, you will see that only a portion of the number is printed on your receipt. This is a security component of being PCI compliant. If someone sees your receipt, they would not be able to gather enough of your credit/debit card number to use it. Card numbers are encrypted electronically and transmitted for processing by vendors who are also PCI compliant. ECU Dowdy Student Stores does not store your card number after your card transaction is finished.
When you make an online purchase through our Web site, your transaction is handled through a secure server system. Your data is handled with utmost care, and discretion.
Our Team FanShop is managed through an off-site vendor, but is contracted by ECU Dowdy Student Stores to sell only officially licensed ECU apparel and merchandise. They are under contract with our store, and do not share your information, and protect it just as we would. When shopping in our stores, we will also CHECK ID. That's right, you may get "carded" when you make a purchase! It's not because we think you're under 21, but rather to protect you from identity theft. If making a purchase and paying by credit or debit card, we will ask to see a photo identification. We're not trying to hassle you, it's just because we care about our customers!
One more thing… If you make a TEXTBOOK RESERVATION online for a future semester, please note that a temporary $1 hold may be placed on the credit card that you use to place your order. This hold will be removed, usually within 48-72 hours after making the reservation. The credit card will not be charged for the textbook reservations until the textbooks are pulled and rang up at the register.
Crime prevention educators would also remind students that they should stay vigilant in reviewing financial account statements and monitoring credit reports on a regular basis. Just as one should be watchful in protecting a PIN number when using an ATM, students should also check their monthly bank statements for fraudulent charges. Also, remember that the ECU 1 Card often has declining balance accounts tied to it, such as a meal plan and bookstore account. Remember to keep your 1 Card in a safe place as well.
