Mission Statement

The Dowdy Student Stores and its auxiliary operations, using an aggressive professional business strategy, will provide the university community with books, computers, educational supplies, convenience products, and a variety of other insignia merchandise. Various services will also be provided to enhance the learning experiences of the campus community. We strive to exceed our customers' expectations by serving as an indispensable academic resource and will continue to position our organization as the leader in scholarship contributions at East Carolina University.

The Operation of ECU Dowdy Student Stores

ECU Dowdy Student Stores is run in accordance with North Carolina General Statutes 66-58(c)(3). Profits from sales are used for awarding scholarships to ECU students and provide support for university programs.

Merchandise in the stores include educational materials and supplies, gift items, and miscellaneous personal-use articles, as well as fan gear to support the spirit of the PIRATE NATION!

Sales are limited to ECU students and their families, ECU employees and their families, alumni and their families, and to other persons who are on campus other than for the purpose of purchasing merchandise from the Dowdy Student Stores, i.e., athletic events, college tours, campus events.

No discounts can be offered to any individual or groups, but are permitted to University departments that wish to buy in quantity. However, numerous sales are held throughout the year offering discounts to all shoppers. The Student Store cannot make special orders of any item at wholesale prices on behalf of any individual buyer, but would be happy to assist departments, clubs, or groups with custom imprinted/embroidered items. Dowdy Student Stores works with many CLC licensed vendors (an ECU requirement), and will have the appropriate ECU logos that can be used.

An audit of our accounting books are performed each year by the state auditor’s office as part of the University’s basic financial statements; and annual inventory is held each year. Our credit card transactions are what's known as CPI compliant, which means very secure.
