We know when students are starting college the information can be overwhelming. The staff of the ECU Dowdy Student Stores would like to help you in any way we can. We hope you'll find the information on this web site helpful, but always feel free to call on us with any questions you may have. If we can't help you, we'll find someone who can!

The Dowdy Student Store is located in the Wright Building in the central area of the main campus – just around the corner from the entrance to Wright Auditorium. [click here for campus map]  We're your headquarters for textbooks, discounted computers and software, school and art supplies, and ECU imprinted clothing and merchandise. We also offer many services to help students save time, money, or both! Come by and see everything we have to offer at the Dowdy Student Stores.

RENTING Textbooks at ECU

You can RENT your textbooks through Dowdy Student Stores for many of your courses. When selecting your textbooks you'll see the options and pricing for each book:  rental, new and used.  This applies to shoppers both in the store, as well as online.

A agreement and credit card is required for renting textbooks. Refund / return dates are specified in the agreement and should be carefully noted.  Options are available for the length of time the book is rented, and you can even choose to keep the book at the end of the rental period if you wish.

When taking classes on campus you can purchase textbooks online and have your books boxed and ready for pick-up during Fall semester move-in weekend! This is done through our convenient Online Ordering System.  This offers both convenience and time savings.

HOW ONLINE ORDERING WORKS

1. Log in using your PirateID or Click "Find my Books" and look up each course by department, course number, and section/instructor.
2. The textbook(s) will be displayed for the course.
3. Decide if would like USED, NEW, or RENTAL textbooks
4. Click the quantity to order and place them in an online shopping cart.
5. You will see books in a "Rental Cart" or "Shopping Cart"
   
6. When you are finished shopping, hit "Checkout" and complete the buying process for purchases, then click "Rental Order" or "Rental Cart" to complete your rental order.

Online orders for books PURCHASED will be charged to the student-provided credit card or bookstore account during tax-free weekend if ordered before August 4, 2013. They will be boxed, and held for pick-up during Move-In Weekend or shipped if that option is selected. 

Online orders for RENTALS are handled separately and cannot be included in the same box as your regular textbook order for pick-up during Move-in Weekend. They can, however, be held for "in-store pick-up."  For "in-store pick-up" orders placed after August 15, please allow at least 3 business days for processing.

By ordering books early, you have a greater advantage in securing less-costly USED textbooks since the supply is greater at that time.

Distance Education students can have their books shipped to a home address.

(Orders placed when online through the tax-free holiday in early August, will be charged( during the North Carolina Tax-Free Holiday Weekend, saving you from paying NC sales tax on the books.  RENTAL books do not qualify for the tax-exempt status.)

The BOOK BUYBACK program at the ECU Dowdy Student Store is one of the best in the country allowing students to sell back their books at the end of the semester for CASH! Not all textbooks are suitable for this program, such as those bundled packages that include a textbook, workbook, CD, and/or an Internet access code. However, the bookstore has met with faculty and identified certain textbooks that will be used again in the next term.

The best reason to sell books back ON CAMPUS is that MORE USED BOOKS STAY ON CAMPUS rather than being taken off campus and sold to other wholesalers across the country!

North Carolina Tax-Free Shopping Holiday

The North Carolina Dept. of Revenue offers a special tax-free shopping holiday for students and their families to save money each year!  Certain purchases made during Tax-Free Weekend, the first weekend in August, will be exempt from sales tax. Of special interest to ECU students is that most textbooks, computers and computer supplies, school supplies, and apparel will be tax exempt.
